Not true across the board. Here in Charlotte, NC, Duke Power has these sales but they are never free or even close to $50 but do have $50 or $75 off. They do not have to install it and they simply ship you the device at discounted rates. They do not control it.

If you let them control it, they give you an additional $75 one time off your power bill.

check your local power company websites, I can get this for under $50 through mine... sometimes they even have it free.

Not even close. I've lived in multiple homes in multiple cities with different providers and I've gotten these for $1 (and free for the cheaper nest model) and all they did was ship it to me and I installed. They didn't have to do anything other than put a label on a box. I am in NJ by the way.

New model was just announced recently so I'm assuming some places are clearing stock of this one.

Can anyone tell me if these are reliable or better than an EcoBee? I keep reading about WiFi chips going out and the software being a pain. I'm afraid to install it and potentially lose out on $150, especially when people seem happier with an EcoBee.

I have two of these for like 4 years now. One upstairs and one downstairs. I had the one upstairs replaced two times in the first year because of the wifi. It's been good for three years and counting. I think they fixed the issue.

I had one where the wifi went out within a year. Google replaced it with no problem, though it was in warranty. It's been going for 3+ more years with no issue.
I've heard good things about Ecobee but I much prefer the look of the Nests.

Might be worth trying out the lower priced E model, been using 2 of those since 2018 without a single issue.

I got one for free from my power company and installed myself. They offer the option to give them access to control it during peak hours in exchange for a yearly check (in my case for $25, which was not worth it to me), but even then you can change it whenever you want even during those peak hours. However, opting in was not a requirement for receiving the free device. Just FYI.

Also, these are likely being heavily discounted to make way for the newest model that was just announced from Nest.

I've had my ecobee for 10 years and has been flawless. Maybe had to reconnect WiFi 5 times after massive storms and power outage.

Works great with my Google home.

Will try to get this as my entire home is nest or Google speakers but won't feel like I'm missing much if I don't get this deal.

Got the plastic nest for about $8 shipped from my energy supplier. No gimmicks no control works fine, but Google home sucks compared to the Nest app.

If your utility uses "demand" pricing, you can set your house to pre-cool for an hour before the higher pricing kicks in....blah, blah, blah.

anyway, I save quite a lot using this strategy.
