In for one, I have the same laptop, but with 2 TB, and I've hit my storage limit. It is still a great laptop for my use, so this is a sensible upgrade.

I have followed other Woot posts for MacBooks, and sometimes people are able to start AppleCare on them, which I'm really hoping for, since it says "90 Day Woot Limited Warranty"

I'll report back the details on this in a few days once it arrives...

Thanks OP!

Just out of curiosity, what do you use it for that you need faster internal storage vs an external SSD? Thinking a faster M3 processor with an external drive would work better for most people.

Not the person you asked, but an external drive is a pain to deal with if your laptop isn't always sitting stationary on your desk. At this price the upgrade is well worth it IMO.

Not OP but I've got an external drive and its a pain in the butt to carry around and setup or drag from desk to desk. I'm on the look out for a storage upgrade.

Pure curiosity. What would this have cost when it was released?

This would have been a whopping $5699 in 2021 at retail when you factor in that $2200 8TB SSD upgrade. We know how much Apple values their drive space upgrades .

Film and video people need as much space as they can get.

the M4 Macs are coming in two months, which would make this laptop 3 generations older than the upcoming Macs

How does the M1 Max hold up to the newer processors? Is it comparable to M2 Pro or M3 Pro? I know they've made some funny changes with the number of P and E cores on the newer chips..

External drive PITA for moving around laptop, as has been said by others.

Now, if I could just figure out how to deal with my iCloud that also the 2 TB limit, life would be swell Smilie

And yes, I know I can upgrade to the 6 TB level, but that's $30 bucks a month. Can you say ouch?!?

Any good suggestions from you helpful SDers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all 🤗

Thats the rub here for sure. But changes across those three generations are small and not impactful for most users and most use cases. I've watched youtube videos comparing M1 Pro against M3 Pro powered MBPs, and reviewers say they don't notice differences except at the extreme end of their use cases.

I lean towards getting a new one because I don't have a hard need for 8TB, but if I did, I'd grab this in an instant over a 2x the cost M4 setup.
