I just bought a Franklin Sensors X700 stud finder for $21 from Lowe's recently. I will never use anything else again. It's amazing compared the junk I've tried previously. Highly recommend.

I bought and returned this one last year. It's about as reliable as a cheap Black & Decker. I had more luck with a no name Amazon off brand.

I am mostly worried about pipes because I got a lot of pipes in weird places, bathroom, heating, irrigation, outdoor spigots, etc.. I see these show electricity but drilling through pipe is a bigger problem than shorting your power. A lot of people suggest using magnet stud finders but I don't trust those either since some of my screws are buried pretty deep and old.

I second this. I've been using Franklin for a a couple years now. So much faster and easier than single-point detectors.
