I've been using this $8 mixing tub [homedepot.com] from Home Depot as a litter box.
Thought I'd refresh one of the smaller boxes, but this one, Medium, is only 4" high. The one I'd be replacing is also 12" x 16", but it's 5" high, and that's barely enough to contain the litter from aggressive covering from adult cats.

It doesnt matter how tall the sides are with one of my cats. I have to have the hood or cat litter is going everywhere. Once she gets her poo covered, she's flinging everyone's poo out of the box (and 1/8 of the litter during the process)

Great size for our cat's Catio. She usually sits by the door when she needs to go and then we bring her in, but for $4, I'll give this a try for her to use while enjoying the outdoors.

These don't only keep some litter in the box, it's also a wall that helps cats keep their butts from hanging outside the box while they're going. 🦠

Buy a tote box, cut a hole in the top and you'll never have litter fling out of the box again. Also keeps the P from going over the sides or in between a 2 piece covered box. Plus it's allot cheaper than most of those fancy boxes.

I set mine inside old Amazon boxes to give it about 12 inch sides. Then I change the boxes out about every other litter change. So far no dumps in random boxes, lol.

I thought that was just our cat. She comes INSIDE to poop.

Yep! It seems that most cat litter boxes aren't actually designed by someone who has had to scoop poop out of it. Fancy designs and patterns may look nice, but all they do is allow places for dirty litter to harden on to. The best litter boxes have completely flat sides, no rounded corners (so you can get the scoop right into the corner, because half the times it seems the cats all poop in the corners, and rounded corners means you have to scoop several times from different angles).

That's a good idea, I never thought of going that route. One of my cats is so big he'd need the "Bon Tool 36x24x8 Utility Tub". (If you have a Menards in your area, their largest tub is extra deep with one tall side for added security if your cat always aims for the edge.

I have one of these, only larger size, and they're very flimsy. Not stiff, rigid, plastic.
