If you are not interested in using custom firmware yet, these routers support mesh with the stock firmware, but the USB port is disabled.
The stock firmware is relatively new, but is speculated to not receive many, if any, updates, so it may be best to wait until custom firmware support is merged and more mature before messing with installing custom firmware.
How to enable mesh:
- Setup your Main router completely.
- Plug your child node using the wan port to the main router lan port, wait for a solid purple light on the child node before proceeding.
- Log into your main router web admin.
- Click on CA at the bottom right.
- Click on Connectivity and CA Router setup.
- Click on both Add Wired and Add Wireless nodes buttons. Wait for the Add wireless button to re-enable.
- Click Done adding Child Nodes and then Apply.
- Now the child node light should start flashing purple and turn into a mesh mode when it turns blue.
- Disconnect Ethernet and wait for blue light again.
- Move node to desired location.
How to set up as access point:
- Disable DHCP (optional).
- Set the device to Bridge Mode under Connectivity tab.
- Connect cable from your router to a LAN port.
- Get some nail polish and a round sticker to cover the annoying flashing right light.
- Click the 'AC' at the bottom of the page to see the detailed configurations of wifi.

With wireless mesh (instructions below), it's one heck of a deal and blows DECO AX5000 deal out of the water, imho.

Make sure you to install mx4300 if you have mx4300. If you have homewrk then installing mx4300 will brick it or vice versa. Refer to this thread for more info : https://forum.openwrt.o
*One of the best standalone routers I've ever installed. Perhaps you were not testing with AX devices but one of these covered my 3 story 2400sq ft house and even into the 1000 sq ft garage. I now have separate nodes for each level and the garage. The coverage is insane.
* I wouldn't call 11w idle high by any means. I can run 3 of these 24/7 for $50/year.
* 80mhz on AX is plenty. 600mbps on 2.4g, 1200mbps on 5g¹ and 2400mbps on 5g². You're limited by the 1gbps Ethernet, not really the wireless. These routers are definitely good up to gig speed with relative ease.
Unfortunately, I returned the three I purchased. But, based on this thread I'm thinking of re-purchasing them.
Can anyone confirm that following this method worked (even though it didn't with me).

I plugged the 1st "parent" linksys into my main router and it's working fine and I can log into the admin page.
I then plugged my 2nd linksys "child" into the 1st linksys "parent" and have the solid purple light.
When I go to the admin page I see connectivity but no "CA" on the bottom right. Am I supposed to log into the linksys admin page or my main routers? Not sure why I would log into my main router and not the linksys parent?

You need to connect to the parent and set it up at first. Log in to it via the Linksys admin web page that's at 192.168.1.1 (if using a mobile browser be sure to switch to desktop mode or it'll send you to the cloud log in which at first you should avoid; you'll know you're in the wrong, cloud, place if it asks for log in and password - local access page only asks for password). At any rate, Be sure you get the page that only asks for the Password (it's the one printed on the bottom of the parent device). Finish setting up the parent, it'll reboot. Then, once again logged in, you will see the CA on bottom right. Then plug in the child. Then do the mesh set up as described in the previous threads. Hope this helps.
