Yep, put it directly in the drum and run an extended hot wash cycle. That's basically all these tablets are.

So I"m assuming that they're wanting twice a month cleaning since 24 tabs = 1 year supply. That's a lot of maintenance.

For front-washers that are modern check to see if there is a "self-cleaning" option. My Samsung has it and it will prompt right around the time i feel the washer is getting a bit stinky. From reading the instructions bleach can be added to the cycle. That + checking the filter at the bottom of it (which usually has some stray dog hairs in it) is all I need.

I'd suggest doing that for you all who are in a similar boat.

What does it do? I don't know the difference between soap and detergent and whatever. Could a dishwasher and garbage disposal also benefit from running citric acid through them?
If you have a front load washing machine, a lot of build up caused by detergents and grime can happen near the door gasket. However, using these types of cleaners too frequently can also dry out the gasket, so be mindful of that.

Top load washers without an agitator don't really need these as much, as long as you leave the door open after every cycle.

However, if it has an agitator, those can get pretty gross and might need to be taken apart if a clean cycle isn't enough.

These work great as long as you drain the swamp water out of the front loader first.

Citric acid is the game changer.
Citric acid is far more useful than most people realize. It works for cleaning coffee makers, electric kettles, dishwashers, washers, and pretty much anything that can become gunky from water/detergent/organic matter buildup. Plus it's safer than white vinegar for seals and it doesn't stink while it's being used.

Stop using fabric softners. They gunk up the washer like crazy!

We do a hot bleach wash (empty) once a month and it works well. Never tried the citric acid as others recommended.

I feel like the majority of folks commenting don't actually own a front load washer. They 100% get mold buildup around the rubber rim within a year and it takes a few hours of assembly and disassembly to remove and clean the rubber gasket. They ALL suffer from this, most "repair" companies won't even clean it but instead replace them because the concentrated bleach (chlorine) actually wears the rubber out pretty fast.

Citric acid is the game changer.
I'm reluctant to try home-made solutions in my washer. Everything I read says they 'should' work, but just as many warnings against using anything harsh on the seals, hoses, and internal parts.

The one thing I know is people will stop buying the tide and afresh cleaners if they caused damage to parts, and lawyers love to try and get a class action going. I mean, there are tons of short kids showing the inside of laundry machines that have had fabric softener coat the inside completely. It's why you see more and more fabric softener deals, it's out of vogue now.

Anyway, I use half a packet of tide washing machine cleaner when I notice I am past 30 cycles, or the machine tells me it has to be cleaned. I have an LG. It is supposed to force you to clean at 30 cycles, but in my experience it seems to be detecting if the cleaning is actually needed only. The key is to not use fabric softener and use less laundry detergent than the manufacturer suggests on the cap. If you have anything heavily soiled you should really get all debris off it first then give it rinses by hand in the sink or tub until all the easy stuff is gone. Pretreat after and toss in the wash with your regular clothes. It's all about not letting anything possibly coat the internals of the machine. All that may seem silly, but seriously, your washing machine can't clean anything effectively if it itself is dirty.

Of yeah, if you have a traditional straight washing machine only (no dry function) then be sure to always leave the lid or door open. I have the combo machine and still leave it open out of habit to avoid the.
Mold and mildew potential.

The cleaning part of both is the acidity part. Citric acid is not safer than vinegar. It sure feels safer, but acid used in the same concentration is still acid.

I don't know if they care. I am in the habit of always leaving the door or lid open on my washing machines. I ha e a combo front loader LG, so what I do is just make sure the last wash we do finishes by drying. Everything is bone dry, but I still leave the door and detergent dispenser open out of habit to avoid mold or mildew etc.

But, clothes aren't soft without a fabric softener. Do you use anything to remedy that?

Cleaning vinegar is a good replacement for fabric softener.

And no, your clothes don't come out smelling like vinegar.

Borax also makes a great laundry detergent booster. 20 Mule Team is super cheap at Walmart and lasts for at least 100 loads.

Or you could just use vinegar.
