It is still possible to get the microcenter $100 off any laptop coupon as described in this deal: https://slickdeals.net/f/17573511-microcenter-100-off-any-laptop-coupon
You must be a "new customer" aka. make a new account with a valid mobile phone number) to be eligible for the coupon. I was personally able to replicate it just a couple of days ago using the following steps: Connect your phone solely to your mobile network (t-mobile in my case, make sure you aren't connected to wifi). Use chrome with the setting to permit pop-ups and redirects enabled (in the "content" subsection of "site settings"). Open up an incognito tab with the exact url linked in that deal post, give the microcenter website permission to access location, and scroll down the page. If the pop up doesn't appear, or if it gives a different offer besides the "$100 off any laptop", close chrome and try again.
The specs in this laptop are very good on paper, however reviews indicate the thermal performance of this laptop is fairly poor. In many cases thermal throttling leads it to perform meaningfully worse in gaming compared to other laptops with similar specs. It's also rather noisy under load. Keep in mind this particular model of predator helios 16 does not come with the higher end mini-led display, though the display is still quite nice overall. The 13900hx is essentially a much slower clocked desktop 13900k, though according to intel mobile chips are unaffected by the stability issues. Whether you believe intel or not is up to you (there's not much credible evidence of these instability issues affecting even 13900hx+ chips, but there are some anecdotal reports of instability), but even if you assume they're lying, boost clocks being limited to 5.4ghz should at the very least drastically reduce the likelihood of degradation occurring in the near term. The 13900hx is more than sufficient for gaming with the mobile 4080, and should perform quite well in productivity workloads as well. The mobile rtx 4080 (essentially comparable to a heavily power and thermally limited desktop 4070-super with slower memory) is the value sweet spot for high end mobile gaming. The mobile 4070 only has 8gb of vram and is drastically slower than the mobile 4080 (the 4080 is ~55% faster than the 4070 at 1440p). Meanwhile, laptops with the mobile 4090 don't dip below $2000 even refurbished, and are only around 11% faster at 1440p. The extra 4gb of vram is very nice, but the performance difference is nowhere near sufficient to justify the price for most use cases.
Overall, considering how low refurbs of this model go on sale for, I personally wouldn't go for this laptop at $1700. If you're especially adverse to refurbs, and get the $100 off coupon, this laptop is a decent deal at $1600.
