So if you have a newish iPhone, and your car supports CarPlay, but not wireless CarPlay, exactly what does this version allow you to do?

Edited to be more clear. If I have an iPhone / CarPlay , am I "stuck" using the iOS / CarPlay , or is there a built in Android option that just uses my phone's data and then lets me use basically the entire Google play store, while still receiving texts and phone calls and iMessage s?

So you can either use the built in Android OS on here to run its own apps via Play Store without your phone's AA/CP. However, this would still require a cellular sim or your phone's or car's WiFi hotspot if you want connectivity. You can also just run an offline maps/navigation app as well.
This also enables wireless Carplay to your existing wired CarPlay, as your phone will connect to the box wirelessly (which is already plugged in to your car) instead of your car directly.
I tend to ramble so let me know if what I said is confusing and I can clarify

I just bought a Carlink kit for my Tesla a month ago. While it worked (temporarily) it disabled the internet connectivity that I pay for yearly with my Tesla. So I couldn't control things with my voice. Also the biggest con to these Carlink kit is that it suddenly stopped working. It say something about Tesla not allowing decoding of video on the built in web browser. It says to update the Car link kit to get it working again. However there is no update that I could find.

So if these go out who knows when you will get the update to get it working again. Luckily I was able to return it, prob get charged a fee for opening it,. Still waiting for my refund.

I just realized how these boxes you are at the mercy of Carlink to come up with updates if the Auto manufacturer comes out with an update to break the Carlink being used.

I think the Carlinkit for Tesla is a completely different product. Because Tesla by default does not natively support AA/CP, what your Carlinkit variant does is emulate AA/CP through a webbrowser using webgl, which is far from reliable and to my surprise somehow works lol. It disabled your internet because it probably disconnected from your Tesla's cellular to mimic and connect to the local LAN/WiFi network of your carlinkit emulator, so that your tesla can connect to it.
Because Tesla doesn't support AA/CP by default, it's a big bet to even buy the device in the first place, but that's for a completely different product and not for this "AI Box".

What you say is true about the Tesla. I guess my message is that if the connection is ever broken or an update for the car breaks the connection then you are at the mercy of Carlink to get a fix to all their users quickly and easily.

Your argument would be the same as having to upgrade your cell phone. E.g. if your phone is getting old and phased out, it will no longer support OS/Android/Apple updates. Even so, would still work with the infotainment device as cars don't typically get OTA updates (aside from Rivian and Tesla).
Luckily Android Auto and Apple Carplay and auto manufacturers with native AA/CP integrations are purpose built to be backward compatible to many older and future generations of devices, vehicle updates should not break legacy support of AA/CP.
Like I said, the Tesla browser hack to AA/CP is a complete gimmick, any updates there would be related to how Tesla connects to a LAN, or updates to the browser limiting certain features due to security vulnerabilities

I formally request a recommendation for a good android-based carplay-capable tablet that has aux audio output that I can connect to my old-ass headunit. video input from an external backup cam would be gravy, as well as sim capable.

The ability to do this with an existing tablet would be so wonderful

I have a carlinkit ambient which doesn't have HMDI but otherwise it's the same. Make sure you order the US version so it works with US SIM. It works OK but it tends to reboot occasionally. I just turned the HU off and on & it works just fine.
I use Tmobile SIM & I can install pretty any on it. I would recommend it.

That's a good question and I'm not actually sure what variant they send you. Usually the product page lists the supported sim bands but this one does not, but I would imagine there are some hybrid bands that would support either country, (dont quote me on it though lol)

Where did you read that? They had initially sent me a unit and then had to do a stop shipment on it because of some error and resend it to me

I have a chevy bolt euv and wireless carplay works pretty well.
I want to be able to play youtube and prime video while I'm waiting in the car in my center display and I do have a Tmobile simcard that I'm currently not using because my galaxy tablet broke. What would you recommend as a media device?

Lightinthebox does NOT provide ANY warranty for their products. You're better off buying from AliExpress and save the money.
