I don't own a computer, but one potential drawback of mounting a phone on the handlebar is the vibration you're subjecting your cellphone to. The higher end phones will have mechanical optical image stabilization, and the vibrations *might* damage or shorten the lifespan of your camera. Just saying.

I have the 840 non-solar and it is great. IMHO a worthy upgrade over the 830 before it, but ymmv.

Good price. Bought mine from Bike Closet as a refurb for $300, but was actually what I believe to be a gray market unit that was sealsled and brand new. ofc it is adaptable to any region or map package.

These units are great for riding long hours, under the sun and maintaining battery life, excellent screen visibility and much higher accuracy and consistency vs a smart phone.

Not for everyone, but those who need to know, know or are forced to know a smartphone's shortfalls for that task, so please, don't post how you are doing great with your smartphone and how cycling computers or calculators or Playstations and cameras and whatnot are all dead for you. Cool beans

This is a great deal! Had the 840 for a while and absolutely loved it. REI had a sale on these for Memorial Day Sale and it was only $50 off. These deal is an extra $40 off. Nice l!

I was disappointed that the Edge 840 didn't go on sale for REI's labor day sale, and this totally made up for that. Bought one, thanks!

Edit: Just took a closer look at my order summary, pic attached... I wonder if it will be canceled.
Edit 2: It shipped!

I have a 530 and like it. I don't believe Solar version is needed or worth it since it lasted like 8 hrs on a charge for my 530.

Same. Garmin had fallen behind Wahoo several years ago when I grabbed my Bolt V1. But lately it seems Garmin has caught up and is ahead of Wahoo.

My Garmin Fenix 7 Pro I recently purchased is absolutely perfect. So likely will switch over my Bike GPS, too.

I admit that switch will be primarily because I got Epix 2. Congrats on new watch too!

For someone that does only indoor riding but is looking to break into the outdoors (no power meter at the moment). Which of these might you recommend?

The 840 is touch, the 540 isn't, so going through the menus with the 540 is a little more tedious... BUT... My old Garmin 800 is now unusable because the touch part of the screen went bad, apparently a common issue. So I got the 540. I like it a lot, especially the super long battery life. Note that you do have to turn off pretty much every automatic feature to make the thing work without annoying you every few minutes. Especially the climb feature is completely inaccurate and buggy and should be turned off. Note that the 540 has the same screen size as the old 800 series. For road biking look into an app addon called WindField, you get live wind speeds as well as 5 minute weather maps.
