This mini pc is about the same performance (both CPU and GPU) as the Z1 Extreme in the ROG Ally and Legion Go. You can actually pick up either one of these handhelds for slightly above $500. This mini pc does have more RAM, but it has no screen or battery or game controller.

Thanks for the info. These hand held devices look much more appealing for me, because they can also be connected to a TV. (Though some people may still want mini pcs if they get tax breaks when they buy office supplies, which most like won't allow handheld gaming consoles)

Seriously, if this has a DP port instead of a HDMI port, I would consider it. It is almost impossible to convert HDMI output to DP, but other way around is very simple. Considering use cases I have for such a computer, there's no reason I would want a HDMI output.

Edit: Looks like its USB4 could output DP. That makes sense!

The USB4 port supports DisplayPort (8K@60Hz) .

On top of that, this supports Power Delivery as well. So, if you have a monitor with Type-C Input and Power Delivery out to minimum 45W, you can literally have a single cable operation.

Surely the thermal envelope is higher on this? I imagine this won't throttle as much as the handhelds.

Power delivered over one of the usb4 ports it looks like, so unless you are using a pd hub you will only have 1.
I wonder if this works on the 6800u version too

Yeah that's where my brain went when I saw that comment. It's not going to break any records, but for the price and the size it's a pretty good deal.

My biggest issue with these mini PCs is the total lack of bios updates.

With certain manufacturers pulling off coreboot on their laptops, im surprised it hasnt been implemented more with boards like these. Not even sure if it would help though since even thought its the same card and chipset, theres probably so much different about each 7840U computer.

Just a couple things to point out...

Ram is soldered in - if that's important to you. I've had more ram problems as of late as ram speed increases, so I don't think I would risk it myself.

Also, purchasing from Minisforum directly is a risk. I had to return a unit and aside from paying to ship back, I also ended up waiting about 6 weeks to get a new unit. They didn't have the exact unit I ordered in stock and tried to get me to give them more money on the same unit with upgraded (1TB vs 512GB) more storage. If I had to do it over again I would have paid the extra money for the peace of mind and ordered through Amazon.
