Keep in mind this is not DRM free like Humble Bundles used to be. It uses the truly awful Kobo DRM.

If you've got a Kindle its a giant pain to get these onto it.
Never used Kobo before, do you actually own the content (ie can download a PDF or equivalent) or is this just a "license to read" that can be revoked?
It actually would probably be easier on a Fire tablet to get Google Play on it and download the Kobo app honestly

That doesn't solve the illegal "issue".

What if you buy it with DRM, and then download the content from an illegal source? Since you own the content already, does the file you downloaded become less illegal? Kind of like making a backup copy of a CD you bought?

Any Slickdeals lawyers out there? Haha.

(Or more simply, just borrow the books from the local library. Mine have gotten into ebook lending too)
I'm a huge fan of Libby. It resumed a decades dormant love of reading and the library. I love physical books but they just don't fit into my life/space.

Ordered these last time, but I have a Kindle tried the whole calibre thing and couldn't get it to work.

Has anyone been able to figure out how to read them on a Kindle. Had no clue what Kobo was when I purchased it Frown

Kobo books fortunately can be de-DRMed using the right Calibre plugins, which might be easier. But because breaking DRM is illegal under the DMCA it can sometimes be a cat-and-mouse game finding the right plugin, much like finding what you want on the high seas.
It is more than zero effort, but I'd been waiting for a deal on this series and even though their color ebooks look nice, I have a paperwhite. A quick search on github involving the new de drm resource repo from nodrm should have all anyone needs

If you just download this content from a good Internet resource without drm or cost, you can solve all the issues.
What issues does it solve? Certainly not the issue of effort that was the main thrust of my comment.

I bought this yesterday. I tried following the calibre instructions to de-drm but it wasn't straight forward. I found some free software with a quick search, but you were limited to doing one at a time. All 39 books probably to me an hour to strip them and email to my Kindle, so pretty happy with that.

If you're going to read these, it's listed backwards and (I might be missing another one or two) but Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents isn't necessarily part of the Discworld series though it was a fun read.

So is the Kobo iOS/Android app any good at least? Maybe this is the incentive I needed to get a boox palma.

The problem is you aren't buying it with drm. You're buying a license to view it.

No. Not unless you download something like calibre then use unnamed plug-ins to de drm it then send to your tablet.
You can use adobe digital editions with kobo books too.

You should use Adobe Digital Edition and Calibre to remove DRM and convert it to MOBI

How sad it is that we can't get stores to sell content in a way that we want to use it.
Technically it can be done. Look at how Amazon reversed direction when publishers went on strike on the AbeBooks changes. Just requires people to refuse to buy something no matter how nice it looks. Companies like money. If no one is buying DRM blocked stuff they get forced to not use that in their products.

I ordered this last time the bundle was around. It took a while to go through and de-drm everything, setting the right metadata, etc. This video is a good starting point on how to download your books from Kobo using Adobe Digital Edit... [youtu.be]. Here is the official documentation for this process: https://help.kobo.com/hc/en-us/ar...ice-or-app

...It then proceeds to demo how to use Calibre for the rest of the process.

A few things to note that might make life easier later - Back up your Adobe Digital Editions Entitlement stuff (Preferences -> Plugins -> DeACSM (double click) -> Export *). It's hard/annoying to recover it later if you switch computers or uninstall ADE.

To make metadata updating easier, I suggest installing the Kindle Hi-res covers plugin. Update the metadata manually for books and set identifier to "asin:B########". Grab the ASIN from Amazon listing for the kindle book, should be something like "B000W9399S".
You will also want to install the Goodreads plugin to get proper metadata.
Once you have that all set, Calibre should be able to get the correct metadata and covers for the books for exporting. You can skip all this though if you don't care for metadata and covers.

EDIT:
The dude in the video I linked is using something different from the DeACSM Calibre plugin...my bad. Follow instructions from the DeACSM plugin README directly instead:
https://github.com/Leseratte10/ac...put-plugin

You'll also want a DRM removal plugin. This one seems popular:

https://github.com/noDRM/DeDRM_to...edrm_tools

I think it's actually a lot easier that way. You can drag and drop the .acsm files from kobo directly to Calibre and it will download the epub and strip DRM automatically for you. No need to even download or open ADE.
