I got four of these on the last round. Ran full surface test, long smart test etc. No errors. Power on time was about 3-1/2 years for three of them, less than I expected. Running solid in two of my NASes, rotated into the raid arrays so they're pretty much 75% full from the beginning. No issues for the past month.

Probably need to snag a few as spares.

I think the headline here is that they offer a 5 year warranty on these. I've not needed to try this yet but I've read some other users say they've had good experiences getting this fulfilled.
Any 3.5" USB SATA enclosure should work fine. Choose USB-C if you have the option on your computer for a bit more speed, but USB 3.0 should be fine as well considering this is a regular spinning hard drive. Also FYI - these 3.5" size drives will require an external power brick, so it's not going to be something you can power via USB only.
Got one of these last sale for $74. Came well packed, no issues with it so far but only filled it 25%.

It's pretty quiet, other people say it's a loud drive, I think they say that because it vibrates more than other drives I have and depending on your case that could make a lot more noise from the case.

any recommendation for budget NAS? I want to retire my aging D-Link DNS-323, it's working perfectly but only able to take 2x 4TB HDD max with custom firmware, and only 100Mbps transfer speed. Or is it better just to build an ultra budget PC for this purpose? I have some old unused PC parts laying around.
I still have my DNS-323 and 321. I only power them up when I need data from the unit. Can you tell me about the custom firmware to get them to work with 4TB drives. I plan on moving all the data from those two NAS to my current qnap NAS. The two NAS are just mirroring their 1.5T drives in their currently so my current Qnas can absorb 3T of data with no problems.
Does anyone know if I put these WD Ultrastar hc520 in a WD elements enclosure that i shucked the drives out of? I got a bunch of these enclosures from shucking.

Not without modifications that I would recommend against. Normally, the WD EasyStore/Elements SATA-USB bridges will only work with whitelisted drives (which this one is not). Attempting to use another drive will result in I/O errors. The lockout can be bypassed by severing the connection on 1-2 contacts on one of the chips. Unfortunately, this has some undesirable side-effects, such as preventing the drive from properly powering down.

Always wait for eBay to send you '10% off Refurbished' coupon. A week or so ago I was able to get it for $66.59.

Does this company normally take a long time to ship? I ordered on 9/1, they posted tracking early on 9/3, but it's still just saying label created.

It's been years since I have received any coupon directly from eBay and seems they do that for newer accounts that have low purchase number!
Maybe I should open several new accounts...

Low frequency of purchases is the key. My eBay account is very old, but I'd receive a coupon from them every time I ignored them for a while. Cure your eBay addiction! shake head

I put 2 of these into my DS224+ a few months ago, did not use the adapter. SMART data shows 4+ years run time, and zero errors or warnings. I'm impressed so far
Thanks for that. I just ordered the DS224+ today (couldn't pass up the $239 price), and glad these work fine. I am going to order 2. I want to setup a NAS at home for photos and video backup from our phones and tablets.

I recommend HDDScan or Victoria. Whatever you use, you want to run a full surface scan, which will take the better part of a day on these drives.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Just DL'd HDDScan. Is the Read: Read data to host the best test to run?

Yes, it should. I just slid it into the 3.5" cage in my case and dropped a few screws in.
