This is compatible with home assistant (different from Google's Assistant). Preferred by pro-installers

I've been waiting for this sale. Keep in mind you might get a rebate for smart thermostats from your local utility company, in Texas they come as a $50 coupon only good at select stores like Home Depot. This offer is just as good though. I have this thermostat upstairs and have been waiting to get another downstairs.

I have ecobee and I miss nest, nest just feel more premium and easier to adjust temp (roll the knob vs touch )

This one is hands down much better than Nest because of its independent sensor and UI.
One potential downside: if you have no blue wire with your HVAC, installation may be tricky but not impossible. Most houses 1996 and newer should not have the problem.

What's the general consensus on DIY installing a smart thermostat while you're renting and taking it with you when you go? Bad idea?

Does anyone install this with a geothermal system? Is it easy or hard?

That's what I did with my ecobee, which I got 7 years ago or so. When we bought our house a couple years later, I just reinstalled the apartment's thermostat.
