I have to disagree with you there. I have 64 devices connected to four LN1301s in a router + mesh network and performance has been decent and stable for nearly a week now. I have 16 IP cameras streaming 1080p video 24/7 as well. (Half of them via Ethernet bridging with the mesh nodes)

Mind you that I only have 100Mbps Spectrum internet but I do stream/direct play 4k videos from a Plex media server to several Amazon Firestick 4k devices without issue. Overall IMO you would be hard pressed to find such relatively decent hardware for so cheap; especially a Mesh network.

It wasn't all smooth at first mind you. I kept getting disconnects; especially with the streaming IP cameras. But I discovered by disabling Express Forwarding all my streaming issues went away. (CA>Connectivity>Administration>Express Forwarding)

I'm guessing that Cisco's/Linksys' proprietary Express Forwarding routing protocol was causing havoc with the IP cams streaming capabilities. Also, disabling Node Steering seemed to make things more stable as well; mesh nodes no longer disconnect from the router when Node Steering is disabled. (CA>Wi-Fi Settings>Advanced>Node Steering)
User feedback across two years indicates better performance with all three off. Express forwarding seems to negatively affect streaming. Node steering interferws with Google Home and Apple Homekit. Client steering slows connection down if you have more than one router.

Of course, user experience can vary so feel free to experiment. if the routers are giving you problems, try turning these features off and see if it works
Still waiting for mine to ship from the last $15 deal. Just checked and Woot says SEPT 13. Hasn't even shipped yet.

It's not a deal if you never receive it.

It does sound like that unit may have the original HomeWRK firmware. Does it say HomeWRK anywhere on the webpage?
No, but it does say "Powered by tanaza" at the bottom of the page

I haven't messed with OpenWrt before and I know that it's way too early for advanced features right now, but I was wondering about the possibility of USB tethering on a device like this. For instance, I've heard that some people have connected a Wi-Fi hotspot to certain routers and been able to essentially use that as an internet source for some hardwired devices that way. Something like that can be good for temporary small office setups, backup internet, etc.

Obviously, that's probably not an option at this point, but does anyone have any thoughts about if that might be a possibility at some point down the road with something like OpenWrt? Or is it likely not even a possibility with a unit like this?

As a brief reference to what I'm talking about, here's a link where someone in the comments (reply #3 and #4) mentions pairing an Inseego m2000 hotspot to an Asus router via USB tethering (it's not much of a discussion, but maybe gives an idea of what I had in mind anyway) …

Good evening, since USB is already working in the beta build of OpenWRT for this router, it should also be possible to enable USB tethering.

Got 3 vlans up and running using OpenWRT tonight.

Not sure if OpenWRT bug or Luci bug or beta firmware bug, but setup was fickle, needed me to delete and recreate WiFi networks associated with the vlans, as well as toggle things on/off several times just to get them to stick. Seems like whenever you change/create a vlan, all wireless interfaces associated with that vlan get into some weird state until you delete, save, and recreate the wireless interface.

Working well now as a single AP in a small place. Coverage is barely enough, OpenWRT coverage is much lower than stock. 500mbit next to the router, lowering to 150mbit 2 rooms down with the door closed. Still, I got vlans!

OpenWRT shows 1 5Ghz radio, 1 2.4Ghz, and 1 6Ghz (!). That 6Ghz is a mirage and is really 5Ghz, correct? Is it usable in OpenWRT? I can't get it to broadcast/enable.

late to the game here and have reviewed this thread but wanted to ask for a fresh perspective - can I use this as a repeater with an AT&T network which has me using their modem BGW320? I have two use cases for two devices:1. Setup as a repeater for the existing SSID to then use to create an Ethernet connection to my survellience system (no Ethernet cable in that room)2. Connect to LAN via Ethernet cable in upstairs hallway and broadcast this master SSIDis this doable? Appreciate any guidance as networking makes my brain feel smol
As far as i know you can not use this as a repeater. You can use it as a router, or pop it into bridge mode and use it as an AP. But there is not media bridge nor repeater mode.

Can anyone advise if linksys is STILL supporting this router with periodic sock irmware updates? What MHZ channels are missing and how does this really impact the performance of this router?
Linksys has never supported this router. They took a bath on $500 units, popped a neutered firmware on these in march, and shipped them with new stickers to a 3rd party as a fire sale.
WiFi1: 5GHz ax 2x2 (Qualcomm QCN5054 + Skyworks SKY85755-11) - channels 36-64 (low band)
WiFi2: 2.4GHz ax 2x2 (Qualcomm QCN5024 + Skyworks SKY85340-11)
WiFi3: 5GHz ax 4x4 (Qualcomm QCN5054 + Skyworks SKY85755-11) - channels 100-177 (high band)

So it's safe to say the OEM software is dead and won't get future updates? From a security perspective isn't this a bad thing to continue using it like this?

For $15 you either don't care or hoping the OpenWRT community is big enough to garner popular support for this model. If security is paramount then go for a model with active manufacturer support.

Cool … thanks for the links! That sounds more promising than I had expected. I hadn't really looked into OpenWrt before, but I may have to jump into it when I get some time to experiment.

I took a leap of faith on these before we even knew about the stock mesh. It's been a heck of a router ride haha The OpenWrt support, the low cost of entry and the volume of users at this point should secure support for this router for a long time. Great job everyone.

This is truly a powerhouse of a router and should last the test of time. AX will likely become the N of the previous generation (if not more popular since it's on 2.4/5g) and last a crazy long time. It's unlikely we see a serious move on BE/6ghz popularity for most devices.

From a security perspective, do you think consumer firewalls get ANY security updates unless they make mainstream news? 99% of all releases are just bug fixes.
Im from the camp "all oem software is dead". I only look for hardware that runs openwrt or preferably dd-wrt. DD-wrt is real easy to setup right after flashing. Its easy it even comes on a few routers standard, and updates come every 5-10 days(god knows what they are). Open wrt you almost need a buddy or a few hours/days of forum reading to get it juuuuuust like you want it.
As for me, i have a potato running opnsense, that i hope to god i never have to reconfigure. And i have this router just as a AP mesh using oem software. Unless there is a massive wpa vulnerability, it can remain oem for life. I did by two extra that i will monkey with dd-wrt with.

This. Most of these consumer routers get updates for a year or two and then ignored by the manufacturer in favor of spending the money and resources on the latest and greatest model. If you put a router you can run open source firmware on that sits behind your cable modem and then use something like this Linksys for the purpose of an access point then it should be fine for years to come until it quits working or is outdated against newer wireless protocols.

I got 3 and after a week or two I notice no issues at all. Certainly a no brainer deal if have dead spots or want to play with. Most of the $500+ price was 1yr of fortinet and then extra ram. I doubt they are loosing anything with tax write-down or just selling to SD nerds that will not every call tech support vs selling as mesh. This has mesh but notice they say it doesn't from FAQ further reducing handling these questions.

I hope 3rd pty firmware enjoys these with extra ram and good hardware. This feels like back with OG linksys WRT53g or whatever it was. That thing was great once your hacked a fan onto it or just kept cool

I also hope linkys doesn't suddenly reach out and gimp the firmware to remove mesh on the stock FW. It seems to be working very well for me but I'm note really pushing video calls gaming with multiple people until the holidays so I'll never notice the dropped packets and bad router software of recent years. Hopefully it keeps just working great

How does the mesh work like? It is stable, or needs frequent resetting.
I notice zero issues the last 2wks but Im not using it for VPN remote desktop heavy video calls etc. Most of my devices are wired even my Roku.

Dropped packets bad routing etc will not show up for my currently use since I don't WFH anymore.

For the price you get 2 mesh or even 3 so no risk. Even if turns out stock FW can'd handle routing well they have good 3 radio mesh on stock. Two works great for most homes but with the slow shipping maybe just get 3.
