Get a clue what you get for $20 and then come back and tell us how we can get all that's included for free. Keep in mind most people don't live under a rock and have to be able to share files with work and the rest of the world and need 100% compatibility with these apps.
Can you use this to host a single email mailbox on your own domain?
Not anymore, they got rid of that feature. Existing domains are grandfathered in (for now.....). You need to buy a single seat of hosted exchange or 365 for business to use your own domain.
If I have Office 365 for family, and then I buy this 12 month subscription, what happens? Will it extend my family account for 12 more months or will it convert my family account to a single personal account?
I believe you can choose 9 months of family or convert and get 12 months of personal (which obviously is not a good choice).
The only benefit is the 1TB storage. Your points on sharing files is moot though since every free office suites has exports that support MS office formats. I've been in tech professionally for 15 years, not under a rock.
Anyone who actually uses office heavily knows that the google, openoffice, libreoffice, etc can't compete. For the casual user, they're perfectly fine, but I use Excel extensively and also Outlook (not the garbage free version that harvests your info, the real one included here). Along with 1TB of storage and I'm grandfathered into them hosting my email domain for free, it is absolutely worth the $30 a year. Trying to open word files in one of those free programs always results in formatting issues that have to be fixed, then when someone else opens them in real MS Word, they're messed up there. Send your resume to a recruiter (who always require word format so they can remove your personal info) and it will be all messed up, not a good look for the employer.
If one of the free apps is enough for you, fine, but stop telling other people it is good enough for them when you don't know their situation.
I bought 2 15-month keys, but when I try to redeem them on my family subscription, Microsoft tells me that they will be pro-rated based on a 12-month personal key. I'm now back to support to check if I was sent the correct keys or if personal keys used on family accounts will always fall back to 12 months and 9 months prorated. Attachment 16114797
This is correct, the 3 free months of personal will not convert to family. Maybe you get a rep that is nice and gives you an extra month or two, but the chance is slim.
show me where to get the 2021 lifetime for less than $30. full office. not student teacher version. not just word or excel. real retail version. not some $3 unoffical licenses

It's not free. 15-month personal cost $36, 12-month personal cost $30. On the family side you get 9 months for $36 or $30.
Reminder: If you have a child in college or a high school student that is taking dual credit classes with a college, you more than likely already have access to office 365 (use the college email address to sign in).
The college I went to basically has provided a perpetual license that has not expired in over a decade.
The college my wife went to rescinded her license when she left.
I purchased two (in a single order) to extend a family plan by 18 months. However, they seem to have only sent one key. Has anyone else purchased two and successfully gotten two keys?
The problem seems to be that they send you the key as the tracking number for the order, but the order was for 2 keys and the order only has one tracking number.

Happened to me too but they eventually sent me all 3 keys I purchased.

Ordered 2 and only got 1 "tracking number". But without me doing anything they opened a support ticket where they included both keys.

There's probably also another group that get it for work compatibility reasons.
If someone doesn't fall into one of those two categories, then yes, free versions make sense.
