Some people like the bottom loader, some prefer the top. I prefer the top loader as it's gravity fed versus having a pump that will likely fail at some point. I've had my top loader for 4ish years now and it's been great. I take it all apart and do a deep clean once or twice a year (it does get dirty inside) and it just keeps working. I grabbed one of the pet dish options to see how that does since we currently had a big ole waterbowl right next to our water dispenser, may as well combine them.
some people can't lift a 5 gallon jug, it's 40 lbs. Me personally I'd rather have the top loader as the dude above said me the pump will break eventually. If you're physically capable of picking up a 5 gallon jug, go with the top loader.
For those not strong enough , I actually cut a hole in the bottom of the jug so my mother in law can pour 1 gallon of water at a time to refill the water cooler. You could pour straight from a Brita pitcher as well. A clean plate is used to cover the opening.

Any difference between bottom loader vs top? Or is it just a matter of preference?

Is there a way to clean these without taking them apart? Or how big of a hassle is it?

I have this and if you have a pet it's great, like the description says and I emphasize the water bowl can be installed at 3 different positions (front or either side and the bowl has an removable inner bowl to make cleaning easy. I think this is a Great Buy.

Q: Can you use other water brands, other than Primo, in this system? Thanks!

A: You can use any 5 or 3 gallon bottle with our dispensers with the exception of the brand American Maid and Glass bottles. The way the neck of the bottles are manufactured makes them incompatible with our dispensers. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

I'm sure there's a few more proprietary bottle companies out there than this one.

Curious. Is buying water in those huge jugs cheaper than buying those standard 16.9 bottles of water in bulk from places like Costco?

Do yourself a favor and buy a bottom load. 40lb of water ain't light and get ready to clean the splash.

These Primo dispensers are junk. I purchased one 3 months ago and had problems almost immediately. Sent it back and got an Avalon instead. So much happier with that one.

You can use the American Maid on bottom loaders. I use one as a backup.

I'm not particularly strong at all, but don't have any issue loading 5 gallon bottles. If you know you can't lift it then sure get a bottom load. Or get 3 gallon ones.

I've owned an older version Primo for 5 years now, moved between 3 different apartments, and everything still works perfectly fine. The convenience of having this versus say a brita is huge for me. Highly recommend this if you don't have a water dispenser on your fridge.
