Windows Defender is not good enough. AV-Comparatives ranked it 3rd to last in the latest Real-World Protection Test for Feb - May 2024. Windows Defender also does not offer all the features that better AV software providers offer. I work in IT. I know the best form of protection is not clicking on random links, etc. Honestly though, we all browse the Internet. Sometimes legitimate websites become infected or malware gets loaded into their Javascript. Plain old Windows Defender (not Windows Defender for Endpoints, which is paid) does not offer web protection like a lot of AV protection software does. Sure, your browser is also scanning and blocking dangerous websites, but why not have AV software checking as well since browsers miss blocking A LOT of crap?

I use Sophos Home to protect all my family's computers. It does a MUCH better job than Windows Defender ever will. I was visiting Care.org (a legitimate website) back on September 2nd. It looks like some of their Javascript code got infected or something, and good old Sophos BLOCKED the malware. See here: https://imgur.com/nXOhqXq

I dare you to visit a legit website like care.org (they fixed the issue now) and see if your precious Windows Defender or browser will block the malware https://i.slickdeals.net/images/smilies/emot-LMAO.gif

Also, if Windows Defender is "good enough," ask yourself, why do virtually zero organizations or government agencies use it? Big Grin

People don't like hearing they've been fooled using Windows Defender.

I took the chance to get norton 360 for my house.. worst damn decision. the software is ungodly slow to respond, it likes to randomly run my internet browser app to advertise their free plugin and just bombards me with ads and suggestions to upgrade, even when i have the advertising notification turned off.
I was using Eset for a while, then went with Avast, i thought to myself, lets try going back to one of the OG AV software. Never doing it again.

I prefer to run Norton, MacAfee, Kaspersky, and Eset on my PC. They sometimes conflict with each other, that's why I only run 4. If I can get a faster PC, I might run more.

Can't be too safe you know.

I had the Nortons 360 some 10 years ago now.
i faintly recall that, the random pop up ads nuisance , etc.

Also put Avast and AVG since they're free. Can't be too sure.

You need to turn off their "Special Offer Notification". Never had an issue with that turned of, but maybe it depends on when you installed it\what version. I would also advise disabling their Community Watch option. The only pop ups you should get are warnings about your expiration coming up.

As to their browser extensions, you can click "Don't ask again" and it should not appear again. I leave Safe Search and Safe Web on (no reason not to imo). Keep their horrid password manager (if they still have it) off. Norton's interface is intentionally made complex\cryptic so that the avg non-IT person will not necessarily go in and easily find the ways to turn off the garbage imo. They are not the only ones to do that though by any means.
