a few things:

flights are found on Google - either ~$853 via AA or $861 via JAL direct
if I book via JAL, I can select seats
important: the flight is via 787 with "JAL Sky Wider" seats, 2-4-2 config in an aircraft that normally seats 3-3-3, so you get wider seats (more info: https://www.jal.co.jp/jp/en/inter...ider.html)
also important: the fare on JAL allow me to check 2 bags.

not sure where the whole "fares only allow personal item/carry on" part comes from. for $8 extra I'll gladly pay to have 2 checked bags per person.

I understand Cherry Blossom is highly sought after, but remember that most of the tourist places are crazy crowded along with buses/trains and hotels are expensive.

My personal opinion is (if you wish to explore Japan), go during NON-cherry-blossom season.

We went in May of this year for 2 weeks and like others mentioned, it is AMAZING country.

AA code-share flight on JAL metal. Even with basic economy, doesn't this would follow JAL's bag policy which is 2 free checked bags?

I concur. I'm making my 4th trip next year in March. The people and the food are just amazing. Just do your best not to be rude/obnoxiouslaugh out loud

I noticed the same thing too. It seems like AA is trying to pocket the free JAL luggage money. IMO, it is better to fly in one city (Osaka for example) and fly out in other city (Toyoko), so you save travel time and money on the train.

We were there last week of May and first week of June.
Weather was quite pleasant in mid 70s.
No heat No humidity
Nights were very little cold.

And it was off-season. So it was not CRAZY crowded at all.

Yep, and Golden Week.

My pick would be late Sept/Oct which has great weather and medium sized crowds.

I personally never really liked Osaka, It is cheaper than Tokyo, but that's kinda all it had as a city. If it was my first time in Japan, I'd only stay in Osaka for couple days maybe first day in and last day, and spend rest in Kyoto. If food is like only main stuff to consider, staying Osaka bit more would be fine cause it's like 20~30% cheaper compared to Tokyo. No matter how much I don't really like Osaka as a city, I still prefer that place more than most cities in States.

Also if you never been to Japan, stay away from any kind of western food (Italian, French etc) unless it's like high end. It's not really like authenticity bs, but it's just objectively not the best.

Whoa this is great, thanks. Much better to book through JAL directly
