They generally have it every few months. The last one ended so it's partially a PSA.

I went to one recently but the workers there dont actually drain the oil they instead use a pump to suction machine to pump oil out of the engine. I dont know if this is standard across all stores but I prefer to drain the oil instead.

That's weird. All of the valvolines that I've been to have a pit that you drive over and an employee down in the pit drains your oil.

Sounds kind of weird when I put it that way.

Are these places trustworthy? I always have a fear that they always mess something up either on purpose or by mistake.

In suburban NY, it's $110.

The Valvoline in my area is decent and have very good yelp reviews. Jiffy on the other hand are known for what you mentioned.

My location has always drained it from the drain plug.

They seem as trustworthy as any other place. They seem more professional and trustworthy than Jiffy Lube.

They don't rotate your tires like most mechanics/dealers though and are more expensive.

Wow. Thanks for making me feel better to change oil myself. These prices are completely out of whack these days. Do businesses believe they can just charge whatever they want?

I had the same experience. They used a pump because for some reason they didn't have the tool to release the drain plug.

It's a Volkswagen, which is a fairly common brand. Odd.
