Can confirm. I would say it's more than decent tho. Still a really great laptop. I have a 16GB model and it's always been reliable and snappy for work and other productivity. Although for still being like $600-$700 it better be for being 4 years old.
8GB is definitely enough for some people though especially if you're tied into Apple ecosystem and for durability, reliability, and battery.
i've been looking for a real discount for ages, but this is just what happens when a quality product holds its value.
Battery life is insane. I can't argue about SSD space - it needs more. However, I never had any problems with memory and this was in the time where almost every program needed to be emulated because there were no native Apple Silicon apps. The $489 model is a good idea, but the 128GB device could work for anyone who is willing to deal with external drives.
Yep I've got an M1 MacBook with 8GB of RAM and I've never had any issues with performance and I almost always have a dozen apps and 20+ browser tabs open.
The advice about 16GB being necessary really doesn't seem to apply since Apple Silicon came out. I had an Intel MacBook before this and it definitely needed 16GB but it also sounded like a jet engine taking off just running Zoom with video on. Apple Silicon is just a huge leap in terms of efficiency.
I am software engineer, specializing in performance tuning, my previous job I used 8 GB laptop to develop and test payment system used by 4 out of 10 biggest world banks. I am here to say - most people don't need more than 8 GB. Well, except those who also buy large 4L+ SUVs used for daily commute.
maybe you can get away with mac, which i am not sure about... but if your argument in general implies 8gb is fine even with windows , sorry it aint. I just tried the asus OLED 14x with 8gb ram and man what a disaster with swap file disabled. Just with 2 tabs of chrome and youtube playback., out of memory error everywhere... Why would anyone decide to slap 8gb stick on that beautiful machine is beyond me... Of course, page file/swap file will help you get through the RAM caveat but at the expense of SSD wear, which one could argue very minimal, but every read and write counts..
maybe 8gb is enough for you because all you use it for is to check slickdeals?
Visual Studio Code, Fusion 360 with moderately complex model, Docker with few containers, Opera with dozen of windows (yes, including slickdeals), Chromium, whatsup, telegram, wireguard client, 5 terminal windows. FHD screen.

Most people would be ok using a 15 year old laptop. This idea of needing 16gb comes from people who want that to fit in not because they understand what it is.
Electronic waste is made by those people.
Have this laptop and use it for everything but hardcore gaming.
I've got a similar era MBA with 8GB RAM and the 256GB SSD. Still works great at several years old. Doesn't break a sweat streaming movies on the local network, running Parallels, non-bleeding edge games. I've basically never looked at the system resources because there's no perceived slowness or lack of response.
I won't speak for the scratch and dent or warranty process, but if you need a < $500 laptop this is a very good choice.
You straight up do not need more RAM unless you intend to install Windows and run memory intensive apps which kinda defeats the purpose.

This one is used and will need a battery.
Laptop is great though. I have two with 16gb though. You can tell yourself whatever you want, but 16gb makes it future proof
This is creating e-waste - these M1 devices would last for twice as long if they had 16 GB of RAM.
Feels like an issue the European Union should do something about.
