My ac busted about a year ago, and after getting it replaced, the tech actually mentioned that they don't recommend thick filters above merv 8, unless your air handler is specifically designed for it (and they almost never are). It chokes off the air return, which makes the air handler/condenser work harder to get enough air to process and cool the house. (I'm not an hvac guy so sorry if I'm using the wrong terms)

I brought up the issue that my family has a lot of allergies so we bought merv 12 filters to help with that, and replaced them every 1-2 months. He said that if allergies are an issue, I should get individual air purifiers. The other option would be to change the system to one with a 4" thick filter, which is actually designed to filter air without a significant pressure drop, but that would have been prohibitive given our limited space.

We took his recommendations a year ago ( bought 3 of those Winix air purifiers, and a cheap Merv1 fiberglass filter) and he was right. The ac/heat actually turns on way less than before, and our air quality is about the same, if not better.

Hope this helps.

12x12x1 is a fairly common filter size. My 3000sf SFH uses that size for some of the intakes.

Our blower uses 20x25, but I built a corsi-rosenthal box using 20x20. I don't think I've ever seen a 12x12 unit before but I'm sure they're out there

The bigger ones are usually for blowers, the smaller ones are for on returns when the system isn't easily accessible for a blower filter.

This is what I've seen too - for HVAC systems that use returns that hold filters; and often they will hold two filters side by side. So it would be an area of 12 x 24 for this filter set, basically.

Having it at the return is nice - all of the ducting basically stays cleaner because the filter is at the start of the intake.

I have a 12x12 intake for a bedroom. It was actually smaller, but expanded it to 12x12 when moving the filter from right next to the blower in the attic to the returns.

I have 10x10 cr box, you can definitely do a 12x12. Just a matter of finding the right fan, or using a series of computer fans. Searching twit for cr box computer fans gets you lots of prototypes for inspiration

Not so sure about this. I have a return filter and it's 20x36. As an aside that size is difficult to find and is expensive so I bought a washable filter instead of doing the annual search through Amazon and eBay to find 20x36 filters and then paying $50+ of a set of four. Now just wash it out every three months and will replace it after a couple of years.

I get this brand delivered on the regular - they work well and they have lots of odd sizes. Price is not this good for what I need, but this is very solid if you can use this size.I can recommend.

I sure wish ppl would stop calling them CR boxes. Those guys didn't come up with it, they just took an existing idea and slapped their name on it. They are great at self-promoting, but sure as hell didn't come up with the idea.

If I have one main 24 x 18 intake where I use Merv 5 filters and another 12 x 12 in my master bedroom, is Merv 13 bad/too high if the main one has Merv 5 filters?

Wonder if these fit the Winix air purifier from Costco. Any one know its size? Costco has pulled that model off of their inventory/web.
