I believe these are the older models. My understanding is that these will still work with the new thermostat

I don't know how you're supposed to know the difference between new and old and I didn't even know there's different versions but I have four or five and they all work fine

Just a fair warning, I bought the first gen version of these (the ones that came out around the time of the Google purchase) and they were never exposed outside via the Nest API. If you are someone who likes to use Home Assistant or another such automation platform, read the fine print before buying these.

Would these be good just to keep an eye on temperatures in other rooms? My house cools pretty unevenly but it'd be nice to see if I need to turn my mini split on for the dogs or something

These sensors are the 1st gen. I had them working with my 3rd Gen Nest Thermostat and can confirm they work with my 4th gen Nest Thermostat as well including the averaging option on the 4th.

If you have a Nest Thermostat, then yes this could be a good way to do that. But if you don't have a Nest Thermostat, I don't think these temp sensors will function.

Also, I thought the whole point of mini splits was that you could make your house cool more evenly/unevenly if desired. Don't each of the mini split units already have built-in temp sensors?

I just have the one mini split, but I really don't like leaving it running when I'm not home.

In that case, can't you just configure the mini-split unit to maintain whatever min/max temperatures you want for your dogs? Like if you had these Nest temp sensors, what temperature would you have to see that would make you turn on the A/C for your dogs? Whatever that temp is, maybe just set that on your mini-split.

what do you guys do with 3 of these? Doesn't Nest only use one at a time?

I personally use these because I have a 2-story unit. Heat rises, and it gets hotter upstairs on summer evenings. So most of the day, I will select the downstairs sensor (thermostat) to manage the temperature, especially if I am cooking and generating a lot of heat there.

And an hour or so before bedtime, I will select the upstairs temp sensor to cool down the bedrooms. Some people might automate this, or let the Nest learning thermometer automate it for them. But I do it manually because sometimes it's just better to open windows depending on the outside temp.
