This lens has excellent image quality in the center of the frame, and a lot of character.
I actually prefer this for portraits over most of the newer GM glass, which are rather sterile looking. For sports or action though, this lens is a DOG
It's autofocus isn't any faster than the 90mm 2.8 Macro lens lol, slow racking, not much confidence. From a rendering standpoint, it's a beautiful lens though
Still, the Sigma or Zeiss equivalents are probably even better.
The new lens will be insanely sharp wide open edge to edge, with no ghosting / flaring, and will focus fast enough for sports and action photography.
What will be the MSRP of that? Is it just 10% better or a notable improvement?
This is one of Sony's oldest lenses in the series the question is not will it be better the question is do you need this lenses vs a third party compeditor

But yeah, agreed that focusing could be a good reason for the new one. Sony's autofocus has improved tremendously the last couple of years.
