That said, refurbs are not for everyone. With the luck I've had buying refurbs, they've been super solid and I would have been fine not having backups. But hindsight is 20/20, and using a single refurb drive for anything important is bad conventional advice.
Actually, using a single drive (new or refurb) for anything important is bad advice. So with proper backups I'd recommend refurbs.
On the flipside though, I've had more infant mortality in brand new drives than I've ever had from refurbs.
Crap. I don't know what I'm advocating for at this point.

Prices vary, but I think it's pretty common to be able to find a 12TB refurb for about $75 or $80 at any given time, and prices are randomly discounted further for limited periods of time.
