This sounds like a decent deal for a 3TB drive with 256MB cache. A WD Red Plus with the same capacity, cache size and lower RPMs costs $75.

I'll be that guy, and just say... how the hell am I supposed to go back to deals like this after the 5-year warranty refurbs are 4x cheaper?

I suppose it depends on your needs. If refurbs are on the no-fly list for you, the next level would be some sort of 8-12TB to shuck out of an easystore or something for ~$130.

If the use would be for a non-NAS deployment then I could see it. Personally, I'd still rather backup my data and roll with a cheaper, larger enterprise refurb than one of these, but some people aren't diligent or technically capable enough to backup regularly.

You don't. You're ruined 😋 I've been buying refurbs from eBay for years, and the 12TB 5 year warranty ones like hotcakes recently. Not going back unless the math on prices changes significantly.

That said, refurbs are not for everyone. With the luck I've had buying refurbs, they've been super solid and I would have been fine not having backups. But hindsight is 20/20, and using a single refurb drive for anything important is bad conventional advice.

Actually, using a single drive (new or refurb) for anything important is bad advice. So with proper backups I'd recommend refurbs.

On the flipside though, I've had more infant mortality in brand new drives than I've ever had from refurbs.

Crap. I don't know what I'm advocating for at this point.

I buy the easy store and refurbs for my JBOD for NVR. I haven't had one fail yet (knock on wood). This is just too pricy for a 3TB.

I have a laptop but I need some extra space, what enclosure would you recommend for this drive?

I don't have any specific model in mind, but any more-less known Amazon brand should get the job done. Just search for a 3.5" HDD enclosure.

Enterprise refurbs are available via lots of sellers in lots of places. E.g., goHardDrive on eBay or Newegg, Server Parts Deals on eBay, etc. goHardDrive offers the 5 year warranty on at least some of their refurbs.

Prices vary, but I think it's pretty common to be able to find a 12TB refurb for about $75 or $80 at any given time, and prices are randomly discounted further for limited periods of time.

Here's the most recent thread on some cheap refurbished 12TB drives. There is some good info in the thread like if you need an adapter or not to use them and about testing them before using. I just picked up one myself and waiting for it to arrive.
