I'm a member of a couple of ultra groups , it's been a day since release and people have reported already the black scratches or nicks ( with pictures) beware

I've had my OG Ultra (bare titanium) since day 1 and I've rubbed it against pretty much everything with NO visible scratches. Still looks brand new after almost 2 years of everyday use.

I'm sure that's just the paint scrapping off. So.. I suggest not going for the black option.

In the example I saw, it wasn't the watch that scratched, it was the item that rubbed against the watch that scratched. What looked like a scratch was able to be wiped off and was material from the other object.

My bet is on the actual finish. I have a titanium model with small nicks and scratches that look fine only because there's more of the same material below. Titanium is strong, but not immune to finish damage.

Same here. I was also a day 1 OG Ultra user. 2 years in and it was at 97% health and not a scratch on it. I have scraped it on accident against the wall on the side of my house a few times too. I had a sinking feeling in my stomach the first time I did it and was ecstatic that the watch didn't show even a tiny scratch. The watch has been on every day with 5-6 hours of lifting a week and 20 miles of running a week so it has been through quite a bit.

Was looking to the Ultra 2...probably will go with the titanium color again.

This seems like a you problem for not having AppleCare+ on it, $5/mo is a bargain for protecting something you wear on your wrist which you swing around and bang into things every day with, not to mention the fact that you ride a motorcycle which is likely an exponential increase to the probability of it being damaged.

Also, since the watch only came out just over a year ago — I would highly suggest you take it into your local Apple Store if you have one and explain what happened. They may make an exception for you since you're definitely less than 90 days outside of the included 1 year warranty every watch comes with.

Also FWIW, Apple will sometimes allow you to add AppleCare to a device that didn't previously have it after you complete a repair with them.
