I would say, sand the entire thing then use oil/shallac based paint, go to a paint store and ask for the most durable paint. Sand in-between coat if necessary.

If lazy, degrease and scuff the surface and use lacquer based paint. Usually this is done by spraying

This is a very good idea. Most beds should be raised off the ground by at least a few feet, thus stuff could be easily stored & accessed under the bed. This is much more efficient for space usage.
