Note that the previous thread on this has a massive amount of technical discussion about practically every aspect of this router and detailed setup instructions etc. If looking for answers, I'd start with a search in that thread (terms like OpenWRT, DD-WRT, stock, CA, mesh, USB, throughput, wired, backhaul, bricked, etc). That may be a good start for those new to it, as it probably already answers a lot of questions that are sure to crop up.

Also, here's a link to some of the basic support docs for it from the Linksys site …

I think stock firmware lets you pick your DNS server(s), but only if you set to static IP instead of DHCP.
Nope you can also set a DNS server with DHCP. That's how I am using it.

Did you bother reaching out for help? If your incoming feed from ISP is coax then you need a cable modem to convert signal and feed RJ45. Just using MOCA to convert RJ45 to coax does not replace a cable modem.

If you have a different config then please detail. I have 5 of these (2 @ $15, 3 @ $20) and they all worked perfectly as router when tested, as access point when tested, and as mesh when tested. All with stock firmware.
I think he/she meant connecting using a MOCA adapter. BTW, I have the siminar issue with mine purchased from the last deal. The connection is realy unreliable and the stock firmware is a joke. I remember I never had any problems with ASUS TM-1900 several yeas ago. I bought three of those and all of them were rock solid and neve gave me an issue.

Sometimes a deal is too good to be true. These are clearing out discontinued devices. Frankly if you dont plan to use 3rd party firmware its a bad idea given all the security holes they will eventually get and not patched with stock firmware

Does the lack of updates matter as much if this is just used as a wired access point?

This may be a silly question, but When using this as an access point do I have to plug it directly into my router or can I use the Ethernet cable from a wall in another part of the house. I never understood the part about putting another AP right next to my original modem/router and I'm not running another cable to another floor.

I have Ethernet jacks in every room, I just want an AP on each floor too for better WiFi.

Yes but likely not as much as a wired access point. Again youre using a product that will never have any security updates. I just got a firmware update to my 6 year old Deco Wifi-5 system. Deco are great for providing long term support and updates (linksys and netgear are horrible and I wouldnt touch them ever again).

There are frequently great deals on Deco systems (one recently from costco for 2-pack at about $50).

I am really surprised at some of the most basic networking and setup questions on using these Linksys systems posted here by current buyers. These folks are the exact opposite of people who should be getting these devices and hopefully it wont burn them in the future...

Thank you! Maybe I should go back to my old AC 68u because I'm sure it used less power.
At 15w you'd have to calculate if that added cost of electricity is going to be worth the added performance that this device would give you.

The base cost for this is great, but can get washed out if you expect to run this for a few years, especially if planning to run multiple. I mentioned in another comment - I run Netgear multiple WAX-202s that don't even register a draw with a kill-o-watt so for me the added performance isn't worth the electrical cost.

You would use an ethernet cable from the wall in one of your other rooms and configure this device to behave like an access point as mentioned earlier in the thread. Just pick the room that will give you the best coverage for the areas that need it.

How? It has two partitions. Use one for openwrt, one for stock. Just make sure to run the right version. There is a Reddit thread https://www.reddit.com/r/openwrt/s/YA7WM5aUMI that describes the process.

I haven't been following it closely but there seemed to be a lot of interest in this router in the OpenWRT and DDWRT communities, along with working beta's. It seems likely the official support will come to one or both of those sooner or later. As many of these as they seem to be offloading at a cheap price I suspect this will end up like the ASUS T-Mobile routers and will be very popular for a long time in the enthusiast circles. In previous threads there were a number of people finally replacing those Asus T-Mobile routers with these routers.
Replacing my converted T-mo's with three of these for under $60 delivered. Nice upgrade.
