Had it in my cart and was about to buy it when I decided to do some research and found out that Ring doesn't save footage to local storage but rather wants you to buy their monthly subscription to view and save recordings in the cloud.

Screw this. Without their subscription you only get live view of the camera which completely defeats the purpose. I'd rather get a security camera that lets me manage all footage myself.
