Still more than adequate for most cyclists; primary benefit of newer models is a better display, tough to justify the premium IMHO.

Is "climb pro anywhere" (without a pre planned route) only available on x40 and x50 series?

Agreed. I have this model for close to two years. It was a game-changer for me riding in NYC. As I started to extend my rides I was going into unfamiliar areas and getting nervous about taking wrong turns, not knowing my way back, etc. It's been a big help for that. The performance metrics (speed, cadence, heart rate - you need separate sensors for the latter two, while the first is usually accurate enough with GPS, better with a speed sensor) were a nice bonus. It was tough justifying the cost ($400 for the base unit at the time I bought it) but in hindsight it was worth it.

Another plus I found (for it replacing my old CatEye) was that it's more accurate for speed and distance and it's a no headache solution: the CatEye always needed adjustment or was falling off, or didn't work for some reason on a particular ride.
