Owned this for 4 years and finally upgraded to a dual boiler + Niche Zero. If you're in for long term, my 2 cents, get the Bambino + a better grinder (DF64/Niche etc), as you'll learn this built-in grinder sucks, brewing is awesome though.
I agree with the poor grinder. I used this machine with a baratza sette 270 and it was next level espresso.

In the end, BBE was taking up too much space on the countertop, so I replaced it with a gaggia classic pro and added PID.

2.5 years later, I'm still happy with GCP.
As a headsup, Breville now owns Baratza. The newer Breville Express Touch and Impress Touch use Baratza burrs (the old Breville one have a 5 point configuration, new Baratza burrs has 6). I really wish they upgraded this machine with Baratza burrs.

I've owned this for close to 10 years now. It's a champ. Been making perfect espressos, macchiatos, and cappuccinos on the daily. No issues whatsoever. Take good care of it, and it'll take good care of you. I highly recommend it.

I would love to upgrade to the 270wi. Being able to have it weigh the beans would be a game changer when you have a party and need to make espresso for like 15 people. My only problem is I have people who want decaf and switching the beans out would be a nightmare.
Switching between regular and decaf is a royal pain in any case. I've had a regular Sette 270 for a few years, and when a 270wi went on sale, I bought it. Now I have the regular Sette 270 for my wife's decaf and the other grinder for regular coffee.

One downside to the 270wi is that you have to remove the extra beans from the hopper when you're finished. It's not difficult — you turn a lever to close off the hopper, then it comes off and you dump the beans back into the bag. Then I use a small spoon to scoop up the rest of the beans from inside the grinder. Takes less than 60 seconds total, but there you have it. You can still easily use the 270wi as a single-dose grinder by setting it to dispense more weight than you've put into it.

Any grinder recommendations?
Barazta ESP is the best value. Somethething like Niche zero is better, but also way more expensive. If you're unsure - you can't go wrong with the ESP. Its often on sale for 160

figure I would mention in all posts over 500. The Pro model is at homegoods for $499 new. Call you local store to check stock, and when shipments come arrive.

New to this world. This Breville ($550) or the recent Costco deal for the Phillips 3200 with lattego ($500)?
The BBE unit was / is my first. I've been using it daily for a little over 5 years now. The milk drinks and espressos are wonderful, after you figure out and get your brewing "dialed in." Each brand, orgin, bean you buy and grind will grind slightly different due to the roasting and physical properties of that bean. After you figure the grind fineness of your bean roatation, and your extraction preference, the coffees turn out very good and consistent. Breville Barista Express is an easy to learn and use machine, has a small footprint, is easy to clean, a good balance between automatic and Nespresso machines and my unit has been dependable. Overall, the taste results seem to be about 1 step below that of a high-end experienced barista-brewed coffee drink you'd buy probably for about $6/cup. Then again, their ($15-20,000) machines and barista expertise are in a league of their own. Breville has excellent customer service and assistance!

So for someone looking to retire their current coffee machine that serves up a half dozen cups a day (I know, I know)...but also loves a good espresso from time to time...would the so-called "Americano" (shot on top, water on the bottom, of course ) be my path forward? I assume I could dial in the water to my liking (dark roasted, black coffee is my jam)?

Adding a double-pull to half a glass of water, even if stirring it, doesn't seem like it would be a pour-over type of drink with every sip tasting like the next with prefect distribution of the brew, if that makes sense. lol

I don't foo-foo it up with dairy or sugar, so I think I may be limited and perhaps trying to use this tool for something for which it's not intended...but had a remarkable cup of espresso-like crema coffee drink once overseas and my friend and I still recall it was the best cup of "coffee" we ever had...so like to jump down the rabbit hole and revisit that, while still being able to drink a few (or more) cups of coffee.

Maybe watering down a double-shot of espresso with a silky, beautiful crema will have an even more luxurious taste than merely having a coffee pot with a built-in burr grinder grind up some less-than-freshly burnt French roast beans...but I don't know. Watering down seems < a pour-over, even, so I just don't know. Frown

Yup- that's the direction! I'd go out to some coffee shops and see if americanos floats your boat first. I got the breville barista touch impress, and was a newbie americano drinker (~2-3 years) and it has been great. You should get a good crema on top of the americano from this machine (but my experience is also limited with what makes good crema in an americano). I think the machine I got could be consider over-kill for my americanos, but if i factor in convenience and quality, I think i'll come out on top after my 100th cup (which was in about 3 months time).
