Yes Google voice worked for verification without unlocking it once get device pay $3 to unlock GV for porting or try activate with new number YMMV or port different number on activate page.

These Automatically unlock with only 1 month service after Activation on 60th day can confirmed unlock date by texting UNLOCK to 611611

Nothing, their system is just buggy. It's always YMMV, system isn't consistent.

Same with me. Logged in with 30 minutes of email,

I wanted to activate with new numbers without having to port. Any other workarounds anybody recommends?

I didn't have to change the apn settings. Make sure you restart your phone and then give it a few minutes to connect to a tower and decide what band is best for your area.
