This is the older model, not the newer pro. If you have your heart set on this specific model, they are plentiful on shopgoodwill. I got the router plus one mesh for less than $20 shipped. I had the original google mesh, and these are compatible, so now I am meshed to the tits.
With free returns through Amazon. If it's not what you expect, return it.
Depends on how you value your time. And recently, Amazon returns are often only "free" if you use a particular return method, which is likely the less convenient one. And Amazon reportedly has return limits - one has to consider with every return if it's worth testing that algorithm.

How does this one compare to the original Google wifi pucks? I actually own one of these but never set it up because I'm too lazy to figure out how to do it.

Its fine, getting a little old, doesnt have wifi6e (neither does this one). Still perfectly fine for 90% of people though. Biggest complaint is you have to use the app, cant access the menu thru a browser. Not a huge issue, app is pretty solid, easy setup. And its Google, so there is always a small chance they stop support, but I think they will continue support in this case.

The biggest difference with this particular Nest wifi module, the router only, is that it's a 4x4 mimo unit. The older google pucks are all 2x2 if I'm not mistaken. Note the Nest points for this system are all 2x2 mimo and not worth the upgrade over the older google units.
Fwiw, I've been running this Nest router since it was released and its been rock solid for our family of 4 with 2 parents wfh + 2 teens gaming and remote school occasionally. I still pull ~450mb/s on my iphone 14 pro via speedtest. No single device in my house needs anything faster than that so I've stayed put.

Amazon has return limit? Do they suspend an account for too many returns? I hate how much my wife spends on amazon so you just gave me a great idea how to solve it.

I don't know much about that site, but I read their customer service is lacking.
