Is this a good option for photo printi f? I have a canon laser printer but the toner refills are $$$. Would this be a better way to save money on ink too?

This is a decent printer and I've got I think a 2800 set up for sublimation printing which has a bit better detail. I also have an ecotank photo printer and it definitely prints better than this one does.
Both can print better photos than my canon color laser, but I do love my laser for text and documents.
I just double checked. I've got a 2800 for sublimation and 8550 for photos.

Compare vs Epson Refurb store prices, which vary - sometimes more, sometimes cheaper. Same 1 year warranty, comes with the the same key items, like new.

Do you buy any third party refills for 8550?

I've got the Epson, ET-3830. I bought it last year around Black Friday, and I've still got about half the ink. I couldn't be happier with it. Wireless printing from anywhere in the house. The HP cartridges would last me about 2 months and cost, $50 to $70 a pop, and so far no issues at all with the Epson.

Can someone educate me on what type of printer this is. I'm done with ink jets (and HP) and was told laser is the way to go. But what is an eco tank? I print maybe a few times a month. Will the clog?

See https://epson.com/certified-renew...s-scanners

Photo print quality depends on good paper , print settings, (Epson glossy photo paper or better, best photo mode vs normal) and a lot on the Number of color inks.

.....

If you've ever painted watercolors, try to get a pure, vibrant orange by mixing blue (cyan) + red (magenta) + yellow and you'll know that you can't.

Mixed colors are never as vibrant as pure inks, but this is how newspaper, magazine, and book publishing works - use a few ink colors to simulate the wide range of colors.

.....

Most of these common inkjets use 3 colors besides black (cyan, magenta, yellow). Average quality prints - newspaper/magazines. Most 4-color Epson printers.
The level for prints you look at for a few seconds then stash away for years, maybe never looking at it again.

Some have 4 color inks, or maybe 3 colors + photo black - walmart photo print quality.
A few 5-color Epson tank and cartridge printers.
Eg xp-6100, et-7750
This is the minimum level I'd go with if you look a 4x6" prints now and then, eg desk photo or wall photo.

Some have 5 colors + black. Cyan, magenta, yellow, light cyan, light magenta is a common Epson 6-color inkjet setup - better than common 35mm photo prints.
Xp-970, xp-8500
This is the level I would go for if you're after satisfying photo prints for albums and amateur competitions that can be framed and mounted.

Expect 5-10 years before these inks fade with uv light exposure, 10-20 behind glass, 30+ in an album.

......

Beyond that, what to do about Longevity and Hard to Duplicate colors?

https://epson.com/pro-photo-print...g#printers

Pro-level printers with 10+ colors and Pigmented inks that'll last 50+ years mounted behind glass.

.....

Naturally, more ink colors = higher operating costs.

So many will stop at the 6-color Epsons printers - balance of cost vs nice quality.

Yes, that's something I heard about and couldn't verify as much as I'd like. I have an eco tank from Sam's. On the forums there were some posts about either the tanks or the heads drying out.

I've got a PTA wife and two kids in public schools. We print too often for me to worry too much about that issue. I would have liked an official statement about how long does it take.

The tops of the tanks on mine are closed. Maybe even sealed, so it doesn't slosh around if I pick it up to move it.

Maybe it was more an issue on the first generations.

so this has the same problem as regular ink jets which basically needs to be replace every year if use sparingly because of clogged heads

Photo quality is decent with this printer, but it does not support borderless photo printing period. I bought this as it was recommended on Rtings and I regret purchasing this printer.
For basic printing it does well and ink consumption is very low and replacement ink is very inexpensive. I will say that it prints on the slower side. Scanning is painful on this thing, I recently built a new computer and I cannot get scanning to work with Windows 11 (I had it setup with Windows 10 previously). To be fair I haven't spent more than 15 minutes troubleshooting it but it's going to involve me getting deeper into the troubleshooting of it.
I find I have to clean the heads very often on this, I maybe use it once a month.
I bought the Canon G3270 for $80 on a Slickdeals special from Lenovo shortly after and it is significantly better in every way.
