Nice price, but RAM does not seem upgradeable from 4GB. Not sure why Asus would manufacture this e-waste.

If you do purchase this item, you should leave it in Windows S mode for best performance.

soldered makes this e waste.
dont even bother with windows remove it and install linux to make it marginally usable.
but still very very very bad.

if these assholes would just add a 10 dollar slot it would be worth 50%-100% more than now.

Nah, with these specs you should just format and install Mint Linux. The real question is if you can charge the laptop via the USB-C port. If you can't, I wouldn't bother -- proprietary chargers just take up space and shouldn't even be a thing in 2024.

Please be mindful of two things:

1. The power button is placed to the left of the Delete key. It's easy to accidentally power down the laptop instead of deleting something.

2. I bought the 8GB open-box Intel version from Best Buy on Friday. It was dead on arrival (DOA), so I returned it. Best Buy did NOT refund the recycling fee. After some online research, I found a Reddit thread suggesting this is part of Best Buy's policy. Not sure if Target has the same policy.

I live in SoCal.

Look for Circle $10 or $15 rewards. Purchasing $80 or $120 more.

There are 2 purposes for this system due to the limited RAM.
  1. Remote access system - remote into some other computer(s) to do real work
  2. Create frustration for a child who wants to game or someone at work you want to ensure cannot do more than 1 thing at a time. Be certain to NEVER give these people Administrative rights.

I'd be worried that the wifi chips don't have Linux support at this point. May need 12-18 months for that to happen. Of course, it could have great linux support. Hard to tell without a detailed inxi hardware/driver report. If they have a floor model at Target, bring in your Try Mint/Linux flash drive and reboot into that OS to see if everything important works in-the-store before purchase. Check wifi, ethernet, sound, touchpad, webcam, microphone, and the screen. Those are the things that often don't work.

I just don't understand what ASUS was trying to do here.

Which begs the question why not ship it like that in the first place and save on the Win11 lic
This would be a no brainer at 8gb but 4 is about iffy.
I would guess that they aren't paying much for windows on a machine like this. I feel like I read an article somewhere about OEM pricing varying a lot based on specs, at least partially to fight off chrome books

At best, this might work as a decent and portable emulator for the classics. But, 128GB SSD and 4 GB of soldered on RAM is a challenge.

I can't complain about the price tho.

Its not e-waste, lots of people do nothing more than browse the web or emails on their laptops, so good price for what you get...people posting nonsense comments are e-waste

I have a 4g laptop and for the price, it's a great PC for checking emails, surfing and zoom. I'm not sure about love streaming.
You can use your phone for love streaming. More discreet that way.

EWaste. $10 more probably to upgrade to 8GB of RAM and they didn't and there are no RAM upgrade paths.

One of the reviews mentioned turning it into a Linux machine with great results. Mentioned it has "swappable" SSD ??
I took an N100 small box pc, put 4GB and 128gb NVME i had laying around and turned it into a Linux Hardware Firewall/Pi-hole. This probably has similar/better performance, for the price. I'm sure with Linux it will also be fine for light use and productivity.
