Is these two or three times better than the HP Vitous deal at BB last week for 404 open box? That had a slower gpu and Ryzen 7535.

After watching reviews on this laptop, the plastic build, its giant power supply, and its weight are what turned me away from it. Overall the laptop has great specs, with and IGPU you can use to get extra battery life.

This should be a decent gaming laptop. It has a nice bright FHD screen with a 4060 GPU. RAM can be upgraded later if you want 32GB or 64GB. 16GB is fine for now unless you're planning to use it for video editing or working with very large files. I'd love to see a 1TB SSD and usb-c 4.0, but at this price you're compromising on something, and the SSD can be upgraded later and usb-3.2 still gets you display port.

CPU the 7840 is a generation newer than the 7535. It's a very competent single core CPU, but not as future proof as AMD Zen 5 (79XX) or Intel Core Ultra CPUs. The 7840HS is as powerful as the Intel 13XX and 14XX CPUs but it uses less power and is a solid CPU.

The 4060 GPU is excellent for FHD gaming and decent for 1440 gaming. I don't see the GPU wattage listed in the spec, but a review of the G15 with an Intel CPU and 4060 GPU lists 140W power limit for the 4060 which is the max.

There are only a few laptops that are designed with proper cooling, the HP victus is not one of them. The dell G series and the Alienware M series are two brands that are designed with proper cooling and that is what is the most important thing on a gaming laptop. Forget what the specs on paper say, if it overheats it's going to throttle and you will never reach the listed cpu and gpu specs.

So eventually it will die in a few years with bad cooling? I don't game often but I wanted something faster for VM's and maybe a little GTA5.

Does it makes sense to return the HP and just get this for the extra instead?

Assuming the power supply is overkill and not just an antique, that would mean it'll last longer. PSU's lose nearly 10% of their power each year. So if you have a 150W PSU it might really be 180W and your laptop might only need 120W.

how does this compare to the 8845hs 4070 240hz lenovo legion deal for $1200ish posted before?

i usually don't buy laptops but when i do, i make them last as long as possible.. not sure it warrants spending $400 more but I don't know laptop parts well

also would be great if the memory and ssd could be expanded

thank you ahead of time!

I would say go for it if you are ok with weight and the brick adaptor. I have the same spec except for 4050 instead of 4060 from last thanksgiving posted by op at that time. Working fine so far with dual boot.
Also note a cashback website had 15% off if you can avail and at time AMEX also has offers. If you have these it is a deal you cannot complain about.
I ended up with approximately $700 with CB and AMEX offer during last TG, if that helps you make a decision.
Do note in future if you have to update CPU thermal paste it is not that straight as some of the other gaming laptops but as the post above mentions this has one of the best cooling and a powerful adaptor to support the system, so you won't need to worry about it the short term.

Below is what I got from co-pilot -
Sent by Copilot:
The AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS and AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS are both high-performance processors designed for laptops, but they have some key differences:
Release Date:
Ryzen 7 7840HS: Released in January 20231.
Ryzen 7 8845HS: Released in December 20231.
Clock Speed:
Both processors have a base clock speed of 3.8 GHz, but the 8845HS can boost slightly higher in certain scenarios1.
Power Consumption (TDP):
Ryzen 7 7840HS: 35W2.
Ryzen 7 8845HS: 45W2.
Graphics:
Ryzen 7 7840HS: Radeon 780M with a higher GPU clock speed of 1500 MHz2.
Ryzen 7 8845HS: Radeon 780M with a GPU clock speed of 800 MHz2.
Performance:
In benchmarks, the 7840HS generally performs slightly better in single-core tasks, while the 8845HS has a slight edge in multi-core performance1.
Efficiency:
The 7840HS is more power-efficient due to its lower TDP2.
Both processors are excellent choices for high-performance laptops, but the 7840HS might be better for those prioritizing power efficiency and integrated graphics performance, while the 8845HS could be preferable for multi-core intensive tasks.

That orange keyboard is a detraction. Too bad the 4-zone RGB is not available.
