Stupid question. If i buy the 4 bays now but only use 2 bay. Will it be a good idea? Can i add more drives later without rebuilding the RAID set up again? I keep debating whether to get 2 bays or 4 bays. I am thinking about the cost to have this thing running 24/7 as well as the HD cost.
A lot of this depends on your risk tolerance. If you start w/ 2 bays, that means either you have striping (both drives read/write together) or redundant (multiple ways to config, but basically you use half your storage for redundancy in some way).

Would not recommend striping with 2 drives, if 1 fails, the whole array crashes.
There are multiple RAID configs that you can do with redundancy, some require rebuilding, some don't. SHR is good but you sacrifice some storage when creating more than 1 storage pool. It's better than typical RAID arrays, but there is a trade off still, it's not perfect.

Same question - long time waiting for deal for DS1522+ 5-Bay .... and nothing.
Adorama has an open-box 1522 for $655 right now. I bought my 1821 from them in February for $808 because I couldn't wait around for another deal. Zero indication that it was open-box when it arrived. Everything seemed factory sealed.

how can I use this as an alternate to store photos in my phone? now i'm nearing 2 TB and planning to move to NAS instead of paying for 6 TB plan.
can I replace the synology photos in place of photos app on iphone? meaning, when I take a photo, can I configure to save it directly to Synology cloud solution instead of icloud? thanks!!

Depending on your circumstances, you may want Synology's 4TB BeeStation. It's made for exactly that sort of thing.

Yes, Synology has a Photos application with mobile versions for your phone. It should theoretically be able to replace the Photos app on your iPhone, though the Apple Photos app is nicely integrated into iOS. My last attempt at using it was a few years ago, back when Photos and Moments co-existed. The Android and iOS versions of the Synology Photos app had some fatal flaws. They could view the pictures on my Synology but struggled to upload the photos on our phones. The Android app had a queue of photos and appeared to be repeatedly uploading and re-uploading the same files non-stop. The iOS app would stop uploading photos after uploading a few.
Since then, I think Moments replaced Photos, and then Moments was replaced by a newer version of Photos. Maybe they've improved on their apps, but I haven't tried them. I'm still using (and paying for) the 2TB level of Google Photos.

If you use Affirm in the Checkout page as the payment method, there seems to be an extra 10% off coupon if you use coupon AFFIRM10, which says it can be up to $200 savings. However, when I apply the coupon, it seems to max out to $25 for me. Has anybody used Affirm before, can I pay with it and just pay the whole thing at once and not split it up into x months?

Been looking for a Plex solution but haven't read great things about Ryzen for this (what these models are) I didn't do a very deep dive though. Anyone using this model for Plex?

No transcoding basically. You only care about transcoding if you have the paid version of Plex. The free version doesn't support it. Also, transcoding comes in handy most of the time when you plan to stream over the internet. If you are planning to stream in-house it might not be so much of an issues unless you have an at home device that has bad support for newer codecs.

The Ryzen will basically just stream the media using its native codec. The work around it is to have 2 copies of the same media, one high quality one and the other low quality which you transcode with a CPU in advance.

If you really need transcoding, go for the DS423+ instead of the DS923+.

Does anyone know if Synology is going to release a new model / replacement for the DS923+ in the near future?

Otherwise, this seems like a slick deal!
The last 2 digits denotes the year the model was released. So, the DS923+ is highly unlikely to be replaced any time soon as it was just released in 2023.

Thoughts on Synology 4TB BeeStation? Just need a place to save photos and videos and cancel all iCloud/google subscriptions. Is this good enough? 4tb is more than enough.

no get a unit that does 10GB/s out of the box or has at least 4 bays
and possibly video out in case you want to do true nas

or get one that has a slot for you to install a 10GB/s SFP+ or lan card

I would only recommend the 2 bay unit as 95% of the people out there using a ISP only have 40MB-50MB/s upload.

If you truely want to build a NAS to do VMs/ iscsi/smb and all sorts of backup/sync things look into True nas scale it is free. Build a 24 bay

keep synology just for cloud base stuff for set that up to host sync/backups/cloud data sharing outside you LAN since DSM is the most user friendly and will ensure your security is fool proof when setting up.

If you are still interested /stuck on synology get the 4 bay , spend the extra 100 bucks and get a 10GB lan card by synology.
it is completely stupid to throw in a bunch of enterprise drives to do raid 5 and then only get 150MB/s over your network.
Just does not make sense to spend this kind of money unless you find a better deal on synology 5 bay or 8 bay units that have 10GB lan already installed or you can buy a SFP+ or 10GB lan card cheap that is compatible. There are many enterprise SFP+ cards on ebay for 20-30 bucks that do 10GB/s
