Lowes has them for $15 - 20 each, bought 2 of them for $30 total, turns out it doesnt work with all Nest Thermostats Frown Only learning and Nest E, kind of dumb so I had to return Frown

I think it's only a design change. Maybe some additional range (but don't think so), they're nearly identical.

Anyone buys this but doesn't have a nest thermostat? I have the Home app for my wifi Internet and the smoke detectors... wonder if these can be added to the app just for temperature readings?

Unfortunately, the battery wouldn't last nearly as long if they had to include both.

Luckily, there's some cheap options available that still work with Google Home.

You need the thermostat.

They pair directly with the thermostat via Bluetooth like a hub and there's no other way to interface with them. All the temperature reports go to the thermostat and then the thermostat relays that information to the app.

Mine did not work. I returned my 4th gen stat. google support confirmed they are not supported.

In addition caution to anyone who wants the 4th gen thermostat. It forces you to google home app. Which sucks imo. Nest app much better for climate control.
