The reason this thing is so cheap is that there are several much smaller and lighter portable USB-C hubs now that are dirt cheap and are more portable (and prettier) than this thing. I bought a UGREEN one on Amazon for $29.99 this summer that can drive two external 4K screens at 60Hz each. And it only weighs 111g. (The product description on Amazon said 250g for some bizarre reason.) They will be even cheaper by Black Friday I'm sure. USB-C hubs became an inexpensive commodity.

Just don't let QGeeM brand confuse you with UGREEN Wink I got a QGeeM one thinking it was UGREEN and it lasted about 3 years with about 2K insertions and 2K extractions (using regularly). Now it's very flaky. The connector should be rated 10K or more insertions but these off brands don't go with quality stuff. Anker is another brand I would go with. I would go with a larger docking station only if it comes with an AC adapter and nice rubber feet. Having some weight on a docking station is better sometimes than a hub-style one.

The super small and cheap ones won't charge your laptop at 60w while your using it though. A dock is not the same thing as a USB-C hub.

Mine supports 85W pass-through charging. At least that's what they claim. Can it actually do that? I won't know. I use it with a Surface pro 7 that doesn't draw more than 45 Watts.

You might be thinking of the old definition of a USB hub as a powered USB multiplexer. I have a few of those, including a USB C model, and you're right that they don't pass through power.

But I also have a couple "USB C hubs" that pass through power, just like any dock. The term has become ambiguous, but most dock-like hubs at all price points feature power passthrough these days.

Of course. USB 4.2 is actually faster than Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4. Thunderbolt is an Intel trademark. By definition, AMD powered PCs don't have ports that are called "Thunderbolt". Thunderbolt just means that certain performance thresholds need to be met for a device to be Thunderbolt certified. USB-C ports not labelled Thunderbolt are mostly slower than Thunderbolt ports (e.g. the ones on iphones), but could also be faster, and some are.

Thunderbolt exposes a variety of busses over a physical port/connector, such as USB-C. Specifically, it includes direct access to PCIe, DisplayPort, and other busses. This makes it possible to, for example, run a discrete GPU (or other such PCIe peripherals) in a chassis, connected to a laptop.

It is not Intel-only technology, as there have been several AMD-based machines that implemented it. Intel was the driving force behind it, from the era when they were the sole provider of CPUs/SoCs to Apple...this was originally intended to be an Apple thing....they had a vision of 1 cable for *everything*, including power delivery, displays, networking, and other peripherals, so that your laptop could cut out most of the external ports and associated hardware.

USB 4.x does incorporate *some* of these things, but it's not ubiquitous. None of the "cheap"/commodity USB-C hubs are USB 4.x.

If you need more ports, I bought this used 6 months ago for 67$ and really like it.

More expensive yes, but an excellent price considering https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/d...azbm/docks

However most people will be fine with this Belkin
