SSDs & thumb drives get hot under regular use. This thumb-drive form-factor is the worst of both worlds in my opinion. It has a small heat sink, covered by a plastic enclosure. It's so big that it will likely block the other ports. You'll have a harder time finding USB 3.x ports in USB-A format. It will likely get very hot and fail if you are using it for hours on xbox / ps4.

Better to get their Aluminum-shrouded "Beetle" model for the same price. About the same weight, with a metal case, USB-C interface and a short cable. Use double-sided tape to stick it to the back of a TV or xbox for a clean install.

You wouldn't be able to play games off it but you can store them and transfer them

You could only store ps5 games but ps4 games should be playable off of it.

Would you be able to shuck these and use them in an M.2 slot?

That could be a solution for the first person in this thread who was asking about using it on PS5.

What kind of drives do these contain anyway?

If performance is good this might be a good deal, but I too would be more inclined to get an drive (with a short cable) that will dissipate heat better, vs a stick style. Gives flexibility to get a longer cable if needed. On some desktops that actually have a Gen2 USB 3 port, it will be on the back of the computer so a cabled drive might be more convenient.

edit: found a good review at tom's https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-c...t31-review

they took it apart and found a decent effort was made at dissipating heat off the controller, and benchmarks were good. I do wish they'd test sustained writes on several hundred gigabytes.

The "Beetle" style is $3 more. Not sure if they perform the same though. https://slickdeals.net/f/17810457-sk-hynix-beetle-x31-1tb-portable-ssd-with-dram-up-to-1050mb-s-usb-3-2-gen2-external-hard-drive-compatible-with-pc-mac-laptop-xbox-ps5-64-99?v=1&src=SiteSearch

Yes. It's M.2 2242. Drive inside should be the BC711. This uses the same hardware as the popular SK hynix Gold P31. The difference is that the controller, DRAM, and NAND flash are all stacked onto the same package. This does mean performance is not identical and is a bit lower on the BC711 as BGA requires more careful power and thermal control. The Beetle X31 uses the same hardware.

Beetle drive comes with both a short USB A to C cable and short USB C to C cable and based on PC world reviews they seem to perform the same. Some who want to plug into a USB-C phone might like the Beetle.
