Product Description from Amazon
  • FAST, FLEXIBLE, FUNCTIONAL - All members of the ROG Flow laptop family have a secret weapon – the XG Mobile. ROG's exclusive XG Mobile ecosystem of external GPUs provide amped-up horsepower and offer a built in I/O hub, allowing higher bandwidth to Flow devices with a proprietary PCIe connection. The XG Mobile features an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU with a max TGP of 150W, allowing you to transform your Flow device from a mobile gaming laptop to a true battlestation.
  • I/O EXPANSION – The XG Mobile is more than just an external GPU. Thanks to the plentiful bandwidth provided by a PCIe Gen3x8 connection, it also serves as an I/O expansion hub. HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 1.4, 4 USB 3.2 Gen2 (1 of which is Type-C), an SD card reader, and a 2.5G ethernet port make any XG Mobile-connected Flow device a true battlestation with one cable. It also delivers power directly to your Flow machine with an integrated 330W power adapter. With the XG Mobile, you can leave your dongles at home
  • NEXT LEVEL COOLING – Despite being the size of a hardcover novel, the XG mobile brings plenty of firepower to the party. The XG Mobile needs to stay cool without compromising acoustics during extended play sessions, so we leveraged our Intelligent Cooling tech to keep this external GPU cool and quite. Featuring a vapor chamber on the GPU die, the XG Mobile can provide up to 150W of power to the GPU without breaking a sweat.

Does this only work for ROG laptops with that special connector XG port?

Are there any eGPU Enclosures available for connecting a Desktop-class 4090 GPU card externally to a laptop that has just standard Thunderbolt ports
(1 or 2 standard ports) ?

yes, this is only for the xg mobile port devices. it is not usb4/tb4 compatible.
it's also a desktop 4080 cut down. for the 40 series nvidia decided to go back on mobile-desktop parity after years of their mobile options being very close performance wise, each card is a tier below the desktop on.
there are cases and pcbs you can buy, combined with a beefy psu, that will turn any GPU into an egpu. the package won't exactly be portable though.
if anyone's thinking of buying this for the rog ally, I'd recommend against it. the ally is limited to pcie gen 4x4 on its connector. using just the 3080 mobile on my ally compared to a 2021 z13 flow, the bottleneck was very clear.

I highly recommend this if you already have two devices that can make use of this. For example, in my case I have a ROG Ally Z1 Extreme and a ROG Flow X16. I am very happy with this as it turns both of them into very powerful machines, specially my X16 which has 32 GB of DDR5 RAM and an i9.

The "ASUS ROG XG Mobile External Graphics Card Docking Station for ROG Flow Series" is for XG mobile compatible devices.

It's overpriced and uses a laptop 4090 which is like a 4080 anyway. Even if someone does have a compatible device they would be better off getting an external GPU enclosure and a 4080 super.

unless that device is something like the ROG ally that only supports this, but not enclosures.

I don't think that's true because an eGPU is bottlenecked by the TB4 connection. The XG Mobile uses PCIe with more lanes.

I apologize for spreading harmful misinformation. 😅 Your right the xg mobile has higher bandwidth also rog ally for instance does not have thunderbolt+ only 1 port so xg would be necessary. It is a still a ripoff though.

I'd be all in if the product still was being implemented. This connector is now legacy and the newer asus stuff being transitioned to usb
