With the right belts, these 1x30 sanders make it easy to get knives very sharp and very quick. Can even get a leather belt for stropping. I have never used the disc part, though.

Do people typically use this style of sander for metalworking? The narrow 1" belt doesn't seem like it would be very convenient for most woodworking.

I could see it for something within a narrow space. Like the inside of a piece that's been routed. But you're right it's very niche.

I have their 4x36" + 6" disc sander, which is a bit more suitable for woodworking.

I could see this little 1" being useful for some woodworking (small parts, model making, prepping lathe blanks, breaking corners, small chamfers, etc), but yeah.. seems this one's more geared towards knife making. Won't compare to a legit high-speed belt grinder but it's better than nothing.

When I was a machinist, I used both the 3" & 1" - I remember preferring the 1" - mostly for chamfering/deburring/sharpening - I don't remember the why exactly.

Is it possible to sharpen pocket or kitchen knives with this or does it need some sort of attachment?

Looks like it would be good for sanding 3D printed parts prior to filling and painting.

At our production shop, we use the 5" disc side to buff/sand down pieces cut from rods and/or pipe The right angle formed from the table and disc helps keeps the pieces square. We use the belt sander side to deburr/sand down freshly machined threads.
