They only allow 7kg (15.4lbs) total free carry on + personal item, so add around $40 each way extra for the upgraded 15kg carry on + personal item, or a bit more for a 30kg checked in bag. There is no way I can travel to Japan with just a 15lb carry on and personal item max, so the $423 price is just not realistic. Most airlines don't have this weight limit on carry ons, so you can get by with just a carry on and/or a backpack. I read that ZipAir is very strict about the weight and they weigh everything you are taking in the cabin with you at check-in.

So realistically, this is a $500 or so fare with just a carry on and no seat selection. Add another $80 to $100 for a seat if you are traveling with family. The site quoted around $152 roundtrip for seat selection and upgraded 15kg carry on. That is the bare minimum I would have to spend flying with my spouse and kid or risk being seated randomly on an 11hr flight. They only seat children 7+ with adults on Vancouver flights.

So for me, this is a $584 per ticket or $1752 for the three of us. Still a decent deal, but not what it looks like on the surface.
It's fine. The plane is clean, leg room is acceptable for the price, and there's some free entertainment. But everything is extra except WiFi for some reason. It was a good flight and I would fly again for the price.
Wow so cheap! Just got back earlier from zipair deal and this is cheaper!! Go if you can, you will like it.

I wouldn't recommend their food. I just got back last week and got chicken on the flight out and wagyu back. Both meals were nasty and not worth it. Bring your own food.

This is actually a great deal...

Miami to Tokyo is double this and that's considered cheap according to Google Flights trends.

Is it worth it though? From what I heard zip air is international version of spirit. So flying on a spirit flight for 10+ hours sounds like a nightmare tbh

ZipAir has about as much space as a domestic flight on Southwest or American. Also, the service is bare bones.

Definitely not as bad as Spirit, but you'll still probably hate yourself for the 11-hour domestic flight and the jet lag that comes with going from LAX to Tokyo.

That being said, I flew to Tokyo last year for $700-ish and I thought that was a smoking deal. $400's are as low as I've seen them go, and I'm eyeing flights at least a couple times a week.

Definitely worth it if you want to go to Japan on a budget.

This deepens on the person flying. If you are older, have money to spare, need comfort, etc then pay the extra 400 for a different air line. If you are a poor college student on a budget and want to do a getaway for cheap then this option is for you. It is similar to the average joe versus people paying 5-6k to fly first class.

The problem is the weight limit of 7kg. Even a college student would find it hard to travel to Japan within that weight limit for a carryon and backpack (total weight). So realistically, they'll need to spend $500. Still not bad, but not as good as it looks.

An empty carryon already weighs around 3kg, so that leaves you with 4kgs or under 9lbs for all your belongings.

For anyone that has flown them recently is this true? they weight everything at the gate for carry ons?

I spent a good 30 mins reading recent posts on Reddit that confirm that they are very strict about the total weight. They don't weigh at the gate, but at check-in.

They weigh you carry on and put a sticker on it, so impossible to bypass it for most people.

Also, if it weighs more than 7kg, you have to buy a full check in (30kg) bag as you can only upgrade the carry on weight to 15kg 24hrs before check in.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the 7kg allowance is for everything that you carry with you to the plane. This includes your purse/backpack/pillow/carry on bag/etc. Will be impossible to fit everything for a trip to Japan in just 15lbs (7kg).

Took them a year ago for about the same price. 3 of us, and paid for heaviest check-in luggage which was about $75 each way. We didn't pay for seat assignment and even though we got to sit together, was stuck both ways with last row seats that wouldn't recline. Also, note they have no screens so entertainment is your phone/laptop with free wifi (but was very slow for us).

How did you guys deal with the jet lag while departing with an afternoon flight?

I currently have a flight with ANA a little past midnight in November. This is my first time traveling to Tokyo and first time traveling abroad in over 30 years, so I'm not sure how to adjust to a different time zone that's drastically different. I figure leaving past midnight will allow me to get sleep during the flight and land early morning in Tokyo, and as a result readjusting to the different time zone.
