Added costco metals FAQ to wiki. Scroll up if you want to read it.

As for the value on this specific deal:

Most of us get 2% executive and 2% credit card cash back. That makes the price $2,611.19.

JM Bullion will buy it for $2,584.41 as of right now:
https://www.jmbullion.com/my-acco...r.weight=1

That's a transaction cost of about $30.00.

I've notice the transaction costs going up on these deals - it used to be you frequently found zero or negative transaction costs. I think Costco is indeed raising their prices a bit.

Based on some older deals, it seems like they may base their price on the price they pay rather than the market rate or something like that. Like maybe they lock in a deal for a batch and then it takes a few days before they receive the shipment, but the sell price is sitill based on their cost rather than the spot price. At least it seems like the prices they charge kind of lag the market rate like that to some extent, which results in a pretty great deal with zero or negative premiums when the price of gold is falling, but a higher premium when the price of gold is rising. And gold has been pretty steadily rising lately, so the premiums seem to be less attractive.

Yeah, it's definitely good to check local coin shops / bullion dealers first. There's one near me that pays spot as well. The list below gives some places to start calling locally (or search coins, gold, or bullion in Google Maps and just skip over the obvious lowball places like pawn shops when calling for quotes).

Good way to run a bunch of $ thru your credit card if you need to meet spend minimums.

I'm kinda shocked how much gold is up this year...bought 2 on a whim around 2200 hoping I wouldn't lose too much. Edit: $2070 (yay!)

Now I wish I had found some of the 30x 1 gram or whatever it was. Bit more over spot but easier if you ever want to spend/trade/sell/barter since it's smaller increments. Meh.

JM Bullion is only a reference price because they post online - they rarely offer the highest price, but they are always close, making it a good, conservative reference price.

Yes, you should always shop around. This is mentioned in the FAQ wiki.

Slickdeals deal alerts can help, along with preparation. Yes, they tend to sell out quickly.

I don't buy often - I wait for a good deal, and I prepare in advance to "stack" it with credit card deals. My next purchase will get me:
- $300 cb for my first $1000 in spend on a BofA Customized Cash Card.
- 5.25% cb on the first $2500 of the purchase price.
- 1% cb on the remainder of the purchase price
- 2% executive cash back

This item would be $2,213.80 after all of those discounts and rebates, but I'm waiting for a lower transaction cost, or maybe a Canada maple leaf, since my others are maple leaves.

I also sell gold ETFs at the same time, which insulates me from the market value of gold for the transaction (basically, if gold is high, I get more from the ETF sale and pay more for the physical, which is a wash)
