Quite similar to the refurb Creative Sound Blaster X4 that got posted months ago. If you need a decent DAC+amp with mic input, it seems there are very few good options at this price range.

@dhodson, good question. You really have to experience the difference a good DAC, amp and speakers can make. On my desk, I run an older SB X7, which is an external USB DAC/amp and have it going into Kef Q150 bookshelf speakers. By most audiophile measures, this is a very modest setup. Having been an audio and speaker guy my whole life, having much bigger, fancier and far more expensive deployments around the house in a home theatre and a vinyl listening room, this little $500ish setup on my desk is my favorite. When I demo it for folks, I usually take an old track that was recorded in analog and later converted digitally, like Dean Martin's "Ain't That a Kick in the Head" and the clarity, fidelity and soundstage that comes out of this little setup will make people tear-up, like they're hearing music for the first time in their lives. Newer digitally native super produced pop music is espectially rich. In the late 90s when Intel started edging out their discrete component comptetion and began embedding everthing directly in to the motherboard, soundcard producers like Sound Blaster and Turtle Beach were edged out of the market and became niche products. Don't get me wrong, onboard audio gets the job done for 99% of folks, but once you truly experience even a half-way decent DAC/amp and speakers/headphone setup, there's no going back. Really consider trying it out if you can and let me know what you think : )

Onboard sound can be quite noisey with electrical noise

It really depends on your setup. If you're ultimately sending stuff to a speaker set that has its own DAC with optical or coax, running through an external DAC first isn't doing you any favors. You're depending on the quality of that speaker set's DAC anyway.

If you're doing the digital-analog conversion upstream of that, a quality DAC that isn't subject to the electrical interference happening inside the computer can make a meaningful difference.

It depends on how good your motherboard is. I use this for FPS gaming and I can hear everything I need to hear like footsteps more clearer.

The onboard sound on my ASUS motherboard is pretty awful. Any DAC I use improves the sound significantly.

Got one only because the static interference comes thru high end headsets give me a headache.

Hoping this will clear up some of that noise incl. high pitched low volume noise drives my brain up the walls.

Just bought a g6 and there is a volume issue with high gain on and scout mode on. Volume spikes up and then goes down then goes back up. This is with a new unit current software and firmware. I think micro usb isn't enough to power. Tried this dac out with a pc38x. May I suggest maybe a fiio k11 if budget is within reach.

I didn't know this was a thing until I routed my music on my pc through my scarlet solo. Huge difference when compared to the speaker/headphone jack!

I second this, also use mine for gaming and the clarity with footsteps is insane. I should also add that when listening to music, there is a "clarity, fidelity and [enhanced] soundstage" as @capn_pantelones mentioned. Before acquiring this sound blaster, it would be on a rare occasion that music would move me and hit my soul (to tears sometimes). Now, music hits my soul on an almost daily occurrence. For me, a bit of a life changing buy with my hi fidelity headphones!

Does this work with wireless headset? I can't see any connection point for a dongle.
