That is a great price! Crutchfield quoted me $1200 a few weeks ago; full MSRP I guess. I've been watching the price fluctuate on Amazon and have seen it drop to this price twice in the past few weeks.

AVR-X3800H often hits $949 on Amazon (currently $969), if you can stretch your budget you should get it. It rivals in performance much more expensive offering from higher-end brands.

Just getting back into audio while renovating my house down to frame. I told Crutchfield I wanted a 4 zone system (kitchen, bathroom, deck, large carport) for house plus a 7.2 atmos in living room. They quoted me $8700 for speakers, sub, receiver and the individual Denon amps plus accessories like power conditioner and wire. So I started finding ways to cut that back to $2000 by shopping Monoprice and accessories4less. But the Denon receiver has me intrigued since I can get it for $650. Do I need the 3800 for my needs?

That depends on how you value the quality of surround sound and audio quality in general. If you just need 7.1.2 Atmos set-up in living room, then AVR-X2800H is a very fine receiver by itself. If you would decide to upgrade in the near future, Denon AVR-X3800H offers higher quality stereo audio and much more advanced surround settings, including Dirac surround setup. You can refer for various threads here on SD where people discuss Denon receivers vs other brands offerings.

I have an old Harman/Kardon AVR 1700 which I love but want to upgrade. Does the denon sound flat? HDMI switching issue?

Yikes! You'd be better off trying avsforum. The Speakers thread has a group of helpful folks who can help you to develop what you want. It should cost a lot less than that! Local installers can also help. This is a deals place for when you know what you want.

That said, think in term s of a two part system with a receiver and also distributed sound with a powered multi channel amp (one possibility). Yes the x3800h could be one part and power one additional zone if you do a 5.1.2 (the additional surrounds of a 7.1.2 are meh compared to stepping up to a 5.1.4 or 7.1.4 with full 3d Atmos) but you would also need to power and control the additional zones and that is a little more involved. That said I'd probably grab the x3800h while it is on sale for 900-950 this fall and build from that.

Alternately, the x4800h can control 3 zones so that gives you a little more flexibility depending on how you want to control things (maybe combine the deck and car port, or put the bathroom on another zone with a simple wall volume control). If you ever see that for $1200-1300 from an authorized dealer like Adorama just buy it and don't think twice. It's an excellent receiver and you could actually use all 3 zones. Maybe that and a couple cheap class D amps is all you really need power wise but again start a thread on avsfourm/speakers to really spec out your needs and good solutions for them. I'm still learning about distributed audio myself and I post there too so maybe I'll see you and we can both learn a thing or two. Cheers.
