These are a generally great kids shoe, one nice feature being the consistent sizing with other Wolverine Worldwide kids shoe brands (e.g. Stride Rite).

Are these considered soft sole shoes? I keep reading those are what to look for for early years learning to walk.

For that in a Stride Rite brand I believe what you may be seeking is something like their Soft Motion soles. They look like a relatively flat sole covered in small pop bubbles.

In contrast, this Saucony is definitely built with a traditional athletic shoe sole.

Understood. Thanks for the reply. We bought that type of shoe for our son's first shoe - now that he can walk and run (approaching 2 years old), I wasn't sure if the shoe in this slickdeal is appropriate for use.

We never know what the heck is safe vs advised vs recommended vs off limits.

Personally I'd describe them more as true to size (with kids Adidas and Nike being the bigger offenders as narrow). Do note that Stride Rite brands often come in both Wide and Extra Wide sizing.
