What would happen if I used Bluetooth 4.2?

BT 4.2 was from 2014ish - so about 10 years.

It's slow and doesn't have nearly the same amount of benefits of connectivity strength/range/speed, etc.

The most current one is 5.4 which was released last year and devices are still catching up to 5.3. The most popular version on the market is also 5.0 which has much better battery life for portable devices (i.e. apple airtags are ~5.0)

Any better recommendations from a price and performance standpoint?

buy whichever dongles you need, but separately. TP-LINK bluetooth 5.3 ones are cheap at around $10ish and sometimes slickdeals have them for sub 10, same for their wifi dongles.
