How does it compare to the higher number models? is it placebo and they are largely the same?

Mine, purchased in 2016 still working fine. The blades are "self sharpening", until you manage to wear through the metal head, no replacements needed.

But why bother… at this price just replace the whole thing. New battery and blades for about the same price! And only when you need to replace the blades.
