They look like Seagates. Price per TB is not as good as the 12TB drives out there.
Those 12TB deals are not currently live, the prices are being jacked.

The popular 12TB hgst 520 deal is now $89, just 3 dollars less than this.

I bought eight 14TB refurbished HDDs from ServerPartDeals and goHardDrive over the past 2-3 years. These drives are in a Synology 1522+, a Surveillance NVR, and an Unraid Server, running 24/7.

So far, there have been no failures.
However, that doesn't mean I recommend refurbished HDDs over brand new HDDs.
I bought a brand new WD HDD, and it failed after 1 or 2 years. Therefore, I always consider HDDs as non-permanent parts and ensure I am always ready for replacements.

Since most of my HDDs are 14TB and this deal is pretty good, I ordered one as a backup.

Yea the only reason to get 12 over 14 is at a discount, in my experience the 14's tend to be newer, and faster.

From what I've looked up its a Seagate Exos drive.

I'm guessing they actually test these for bad sectors. The 12tb drives had a 5 year warranty, cheaper, but didn't guarantee no bad sectors.
They do, though. You can get it replaced if any bad sectors show up during the 5 year warranty.

Hmm. At $92 for these, think I'll hold off for when GoHarddrive lowers their price on the WD ultrastar 14tb to $100 again (or lower). Bought 6 of them back in June, those come with the seller 5 years warranty.

If they pass a full burn in/verification test they are like any other refurb, only trust with additional redundancy.

They may claim to scan but its short scan no doubt, a real scan takes about 2 days, so basically you get to do the QC work at this price.
I believe they rest the SMART and then run a FULL length scan. I bought one 18TB Seagate from svrprts. It had 16 hours (or was it 19?) power-on. That's the time my drive was in the scan.

Thinking about using two of these for (redundant) archival storage - where they'll be offline and spun up maybe every few months to do a backup. Reasoning is that even if they're near end-of-life, minimal additional wear would occur.

Stupid idea or what???? Confused

I've been looking into getting a WD Red of either 6TB or 8TB, but whyyy is this about the same price and why are people saying 12GB is a better deal than even that? I'm so confused.

You are comparing used with new.

People favor the hgst's, but those aren't on sale right now, and even those are fading because the smaller the refurb is the older a batch it tends to be.

No, that's exactly what many of us use them for.

Refurbished my ash. It probably was used for 4 or 5 years on server. Only has 1 or 2 years left. I ain't buying that CRAP
Enterprise drive class has a MTBF of about 2.5 million hours. A vast majority of them will last a decade or more, which is why many come with 5 year warranties.

But given every day the drive is used makes it a day closer to it's actual failure, it's always a good idea to plan for redundancy. That's why these often end up in a NAS that offers some form of parity protection. Plus you're also making backups, right?

How do you get the warranty if needed? Anybody has experience?
